ICE Incident Injures US Citizen Because That's Totally Their Job

I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest incident involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Long Beach, California, and I have to say, it’s quite the story. A resident, Ricardo Gonzalez, was injured during an incident with ICE on Saturday, according to federal and local officials. Now, I’m no expert, but it seems like things escalated quickly. Gonzalez, a former Long Beach city employee, was found by Long Beach police after he and other community members called 911, concerned about unmarked vehicles. Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson told CNN that Gonzalez called 911 when he saw a circumstance escalating, and when the police arrived, he was detained and injured.

Now, let’s get into the details. ICE personnel had requested emergency assistance from the Long Beach Police Department due to vehicle vandalism and a person in need of medical aid. When local officers arrived, they found a man handcuffed and bleeding while being detained by ICE, and a “large group disturbance” was taking place. It’s not yet known what led up to the circumstances or what occurred before Gonzalez was detained. Richardson said he was “outraged” over the incident and spoke with Gonzalez, who claims to be a US citizen, and his family following the incident.

I’m not one to jump to conclusions, but it seems like ICE might have used a bit too much force. Videos shared by a witness showed Gonzalez handcuffed and lying on the ground, yelling repeatedly, “Help me, my arm is broken” and “call a paramedic.” US Rep. Robert Garcia, a Democrat from California, called the videos “horrific” and said ICE agents “brutally attacked and broke the arm of a North Long Beach resident and U.S. citizen.” A GoFundMe was created by Gonzalez’s daughter, Leslie Gonzalez, to pay his medical bills, and she wrote that her father is currently receiving treatment for his injuries.

It’s worth noting that US citizens have been caught up in the Trump administration’s sweeping immigration crackdown, which has featured highly visible enforcement operations and aggressive tactics. CNN has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security, the city of Long Beach, and Long Beach police for more information. Richardson said he attempted to contact ICE through its complaint hotline but has yet to speak with someone at the agency. What would have been a safe weekend in North Long Beach “turned into a violent incident with no transparency or accountability, and a lot more questions than answers,” Richardson told CNN.

As I finish my coffee, I’m left thinking that this incident is a bit of a mess. It’s unclear what exactly happened, but it’s clear that things didn’t go smoothly. I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about this story in the coming days. In the meantime, I’ll just say that it’s always a good idea to de-escalate situations, rather than letting them escalate into a big ol’ mess. And to ICE, I’d say, maybe try to avoid breaking anyone’s arm, okay? That’s just a suggestion from a concerned citizen, sipping his coffee and shaking his head.
