Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. Democratic Sen. Elissa Slotkin is in hot water after suggesting that congressional investigations could deter recent graduates from joining the Trump administration. I mean, who wouldn’t want to work for an administration that’s been the subject of so much controversy? It’s not like they’re trying to scare people away or anything. Slotkin made these remarks at a University of Chicago event, where she said that if Democrats regained the majority in Congress, they should focus on passing major domestic bills and using their oversight powers to investigate “signature” examples of corruption by the Trump administration.
I’m not sure what’s more amusing, the fact that Slotkin thinks this will actually deter people from working for the Trump administration, or the fact that Republicans are outraged by her comments. I mean, come on, it’s not like they’re going to start a “Help Wanted” ad campaign to attract new talent. Sen. Mike Lee accused her of threatening young Americans, and Mike Davis, the head of a conservative legal group, told her to “learn about the Second Amendment, sweetheart.” Oh, bless their hearts.
Slotkin fired back, saying that Davis was suggesting she be shot, and that it amounted to “death threats” against her and her staff. Okay, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but I can see why she’d be upset. The controversy over her comments comes just before the midterm elections, where Democrats are hoping to win the House and possibly even the Senate. If that happens, we can expect a whole lot of congressional investigations into the Trump administration.
A group of conservative students at the University of Chicago clipped a portion of Slotkin’s comments and posted it online, where it’s been viewed over 7 million times. Lee responded, saying it was “absolutely disgraceful” to threaten young Americans for participating in politics. Slotkin shot back, saying Lee was “lying about what I said” and told him to “spare us the manufactured outrage.” Oh, this is getting good.
Slotkin also noted that she was targeted by Trump’s Justice Department, which investigated her and other Democratic lawmakers after they posted a video urging service members and intelligence officials to disobey any illegal orders from the administration. She wrote a pretty scathing post to Lee, saying that if he had aided in the corrupt use of taxpayer dollars to benefit the President or his family, he should be held accountable. Ouch.
Other Trump administration officials, including Director of the Office of Personnel Management Scott Kupor, have also criticized Slotkin’s comments. Kupor said it was “incredibly disappointing and unprofessional” to endorse political prosecutions to dissuade patriotic Americans from serving their country. I’m not sure what’s more disappointing, the fact that Slotkin made these comments or the fact that Kupor thinks the Trump administration is a great place to work.
In conclusion, this whole thing is a big mess, and I’m just here for the popcorn. Slotkin’s comments may have been a bit over the top, but you can’t blame her for trying to scare people away from working for the Trump administration. And as for the Republicans, well, they’re just mad because they know they’re in trouble if Democrats win the midterms. As I always say, you can’t make this stuff up, and I’m just glad I get to sit back and watch it all unfold with my coffee in hand. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, but to me, it’s just another day in politics.
