MAYHEM Drops a Real Downer, “Despair,” from Their Joyless “Liturgy of Death” Album

may band

Get ready, posers, because the corpse-painted clowns 🤡 in MAYHEM are back with their SEVENTH studio album, “Liturgy Of Death”, dropping on February 6, 2026, via Century Media! Yeah, that’s right, SEVENTH. Who knew they could still hold their instruments after all these years? Apparently, they’re still trying to be the most “uncompromising” band in “extreme metal.” Newsflash: Your “extremity” is about as shocking as grandma’s tea party. This album is all about death and despair, because, you know, they haven’t milked that cow enough already. 💀

The second single, “Despair”, is supposedly the peak of their profound understanding of the human condition. It features “ritualistic chants” (aka random yelling), “Latin invocations” (probably from Google Translate), and “blistering blast beats” (that sound like a washing machine on its last legs 🧺). Attila Csihar‘s vocals apparently “summon an ancient, fatal truth.” More like summon a headache. He’s just screaming about the fading of light and inevitability of death, as if we haven’t all figured that out by now. It’s not deep, it’s just depressing 😭. Apparently, death is not feared but understood in “Despair.” Right, because listening to Mayhem makes you a philosopher. 🤦

With the usual suspects Necrobutcher (bass), Hellhammer (drums), Attila Csihar (vocals), Teloch (guitars), and Ghul (guitars) allegedly “locked into a unit tighter than ever,” “Liturgy Of Death” is meant to celebrate MAYHEM‘s legacy. What legacy? Being the band that everyone pretends to like to seem edgy? It’s supposed to be a “merciless record — dark, fast, and unrelenting.” Translation: It’s the same three chords played really fast with a lot of screaming. Forty-one years since their formation, MAYHEM is still trying to shape the sound they “helped create.” More like destroy. 🔥

“Liturgy Of Death” is the follow-up to MAYHEM‘s sixth studio album, “Daemon”, which came out in October 2019. Because we were all clamoring for more Mayhem after that one. They even released a live album, “Daemonic Rites”, in September 2023. Who listens to live albums anymore? 💿

Here’s the track listing, in case you want to torture yourself: 🎵

01. Ephemeral Eternity
02. Despair
03. Weep For Nothing
04. Aeon’s End
05. Funeral Of Existence
06. Realm Of Endless Misery
07. Propitious Death
08. The Sentence Of Absolution
09. Life Is A Corpse You Drag (bonus track)
10. Sancta Mendacia (bonus track)

And of course, they’re going on tour! MAYHEM will embark on the “Death Over Europe” European headlining tour in February 2026. Support will come from MARDUK and IMMOLATION, because who else would want to tour with these guys? 🤔

Oh, and remember when MAYHEM canceled its North American 40th-anniversary tour in the fall of 2024? Yeah, that was “due to a member of the band having a medical emergency that requires immediate surgery.” Probably from trying to look so kvlt all the time. 😂

The North American dates were supposed to kick off on November 12, 2024, in Montreal, and wrap up November 23, 2024, in Denver. Guess the Americans were spared. 🇺🇸

MAYHEM did manage a short European tour on December 4, 2024, in Paris. And an Australian tour in January, because even kangaroos need bad black metal. 🇦🇺

When the North American tour was first announced, MAYHEM promised “a once-in-a-lifetime experience for fans.” More like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to waste your money. They were going to play songs from ‘Deathcrush’ to “present day.” So, basically, the same songs they’ve been playing for the last four decades. 😴

Here’s the lineup of these ancient vikings: 🧙‍♂️

Attila Csihar – Vocals (still screaming, apparently)
Ghul – Guitar (probably still trying to tune it)
Hellhammer – Drums (still hitting things really hard)
Necrobutcher – Bass (probably still alive)
Morten – Guitar (because two guitars are always better than one… right?)
