Log Cabin Republicans Ditch Trans Friends, Still Super Conservative Though

Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. The Log Cabin Republicans, a group for gay conservatives, has decided to drop the “T” from their “LGBT” mission. Yep, you read that right – they’re no longer advocating for transgender people. This is a big break within the LGBTQ movement, and it’s happening at a time when the GOP is making opposition to trans rights a major priority. I mean, I’m not surprised, but still, it’s a pretty significant shift.

I guess it’s not entirely shocking, given that Log Cabin Republicans President Ross Hemminger told CNN that his members have grown increasingly uncomfortable with some of the focuses of the trans community, like gender-affirming care for minors and trans girls and women participating in sports. Hemminger said, “It has gone to places we never in good conscience could get behind.” Okay, I get it, but it’s still a bit surprising to see a group that’s been advocating for LGBTQ rights for so long suddenly decide to drop the “T”.

The decision comes as gay and lesbian Republicans face renewed threats to their rights, with challenges emerging from within their own party. Earlier this year, a coalition of conservative groups launched an initiative aimed at challenging the legal foundations of same-sex marriage and preventing gay and lesbian couples from adopting children. Meanwhile, some Republican officials are calling for new restrictions on surrogacy births, which would limit family-building options for LGBTQ+ couples. It’s like, what’s next?

I have to say, I’m a bit amused by the reaction of some conservative figures, like Allie Beth Stuckey, who criticized surrogacy, likening it to “trafficking babies”. Hemminger had a pretty blunt response to that, saying “Allie Beth is a wildly talented communicator. She’s also a f**king idiot.” Oh, snap! I think we can all agree that surrogacy is a complex issue, but come on, it’s not exactly the same as trafficking babies.

The Human Rights Campaign criticized Log Cabin Republicans, saying that “the vast majority of us understand that all our freedoms are intertwined”. They’re right, of course – splitting up the LGBTQ+ community and pitting them against each other is not going to help anyone. As spokesperson Delphine Luneau said, “Sacrificing one part of a community in the false hope that it will somehow protect the rest of it has never worked throughout history, and it’s a tactic that should be rejected again today”.

It’s worth noting that opposition to gay rights has largely faded from Republican campaigns since the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide in 2015. Under Trump’s direction, the GOP even removed objections to same-sex marriage in its party platform. But now, it seems like some groups are eager to revive old cultural battles. As Hemminger said, “We’ll obviously have future nominees and party leaders who are more conservative on those issues than Donald Trump”. Yeah, that’s a bit concerning.

In conclusion, the Log Cabin Republicans’ decision to drop the “T” from their mission is a significant shift, and it’s happening at a time when the LGBTQ+ community needs all the support it can get. I’m not sure what the future holds, but I do know that we need to be careful not to pit different groups against each other. As for Log Cabin Republicans, well, I guess you could say they’re trying to “log” out of the trans rights debate – but I’m not sure that’s going to fly. 😂
