I mean, it’s not like the original members are still rocking out, but their spirit lives on through a bunch of other dudes who are keeping the name alive 🤪. Bassist Stevie Stewart and drummer Richie Onori, who are part of the current lineup, recently sat down with Remzi “Jam Man” Yates of Rocking With Jam Man to talk about their involvement with THE SWEET. Because, you know, the world was just missing a THE SWEET interview 🙄.
The Wild Story of THE SWEET’s Lineup
So, let’s get this straight. The original THE SWEET lineup was formed in the UK back in 1968 and featured Brian Connolly on lead vocals, Steve Priest on bass, Mick Tucker on drums, and Frank Torpey on guitar, who was later replaced by Mick Stewart and then Andy Scott 🤯. But, over the years, the lineup changed more times than I change my socks 🚮. Steve Priest, who had the rights to use the THE SWEET name in the US and Canada, launched a new incarnation of the band in 2008, and it’s been a wild ride ever since 🎢.
But, here’s the thing. After Steve Priest passed away in 2020, the current lineup, which includes Stevie Stewart, Richie Onori, Ariel Kamin, Jimmy Burkard, and Dave Schulz, decided to keep the band going because, why not? 🤷♂️ I mean, it’s not like they’re trying to cash in on the original members’ legacy or anything 🤑. According to Richie Onori, Steve Priest wanted them to continue on with the band, and they’re just honoring his memory by rocking out and playing all the classic hits 🎸.
The Drama with Andy Scott
But, of course, there’s drama involved. Andy Scott, the guitarist from the original lineup, has been touring with his own version of THE SWEET in the UK and Europe, and he’s not too happy about the US-based lineup using the same name 🤬. He recently said that it’s “not right” for them to be touring without any original members, and I’m like, dude, come on 🙄. It’s not like they’re trying to fool anyone into thinking they’re the real deal 🙃. Richie Onori responded to Andy Scott’s comments by saying that they have the rights to use the name and that Steve Priest wanted them to continue on with the band 🙏.
I don’t know, man. It’s all just a big mess 🤯. But, hey, at least the music lives on, right? 🎵 THE SWEET has sold a staggering 55 million records worldwide, and they’re still rocking out to this day 🤟. So, if you’re feeling nostalgic and want to see a bunch of dudes play some classic rock songs, then THE SWEET is the band for you 🎟️. Just don’t expect to see any of the original members, because, you know, they’re all old or dead now 😂.
