Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest news from Ukraine, and let me tell you, it’s a doozy. President Donald Trump and his administration have been putting pressure on Ukraine to stop striking Russian refineries, citing harm to American consumers. But here’s the thing, they’ve remained silent on recent Russian strikes on US businesses in Ukraine. I mean, what’s going on here? You’d think they’d be all over this, defending American interests and all that jazz.
Apparently, Russia has escalated its attacks on facilities tied to American corporations, including Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, McDonald’s, and Oreo. Andy Hunder, the President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, says that Russian missiles and drones have damaged these facilities, and it’s “nothing we’ve seen like over the last months.” He also mentioned that the attacks are a “direct hit” and are sending a message that they’re targeting American business.
Now, I’m not one to cry foul, but it seems like the White House is being a bit inconsistent here. They’re warning Ukraine about striking Russian energy infrastructure, but they’re not saying much about the Russian attacks on American businesses. Hunder told CNN that “we need this to stop because these are American interests, American money, American investors that are being hit and are being targeted.” You can’t blame the guy for wanting to protect American businesses.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also spoken out about the attacks, saying that they’re a “clear signal” from Russia to America. He even mentioned that the Russians struck a Coca-Cola plant with a drone, which is just crazy. I mean, who targets a soda factory? Later, a warehouse used by McDonald’s was also hit by a Russian drone strike. McDonald’s Ukraine confirmed that the warehouse was damaged, and as a result, their restaurants are offering a reduced menu.
The US businesses on the ground seem to be a bit divided on how much they want to talk publicly about being hit. Some want to raise awareness, while others are “treading very carefully.” But several Democratic US lawmakers have called on the White House to do more to protect American businesses in Ukraine and to call out Moscow’s actions.
The Trump administration has condemned Ukraine’s energy strikes, but their relative silence on the Russian attacks on American businesses is puzzling. A White House official said that Trump wants the war to stop entirely, but it’s hard to understand why they’re not being more vocal about defending American interests.
In the end, it’s all a bit confusing, and I’m left scratching my head. The US should be protecting its businesses and interests abroad, but it seems like they’re not doing enough. As Hunder said, “any company, any business, wants to have some sort of protection. You would expect your government to stand up in your corner and fight the fight with you, especially if it’s a foreign military that is attacking the American companies.” Well, I suppose that’s just the way the cookie crumbles, or in this case, the way the McDonald’s burger gets hit by a drone strike.
