Prepare to be Underwhelmed: Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value” Trailer Drops, Starring Renate Reinsve and the Ever-Brooding Stellan Skarsgård

Oh joy, MUBI, that bastion of cinematic snobbery, is gracing us with a UK & Ireland trailer for Sentimental Value, the latest snoozefest from Academy Award®-nominee Joachim Trier (because one nomination makes you a god, apparently). This cinematic masterpiece (I use the term loosely) is hitting cinemas on December 26, 2025, because what better way to celebrate Boxing Day than with a film about family drama? It premiered at the BFI London Film Festival, which basically guarantees it’s going to be pretentious and boring. And get this, Norway is submitting it for the 2026 Academy Awards®! Prepare for another year of painfully dull acceptance speeches. 😴

Directed by the aforementioned Trier and co-written with Eskil Vogt (who apparently hasn’t learned his lesson from The Worst Person in the World), Sentimental Value stars Renate Reinsve (again?!), Stellan Skarsgård (who probably needed a paycheck), Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (who?) and Elle Fanning (because Hollywood needs more nepotism). Seriously, can’t they find any new faces? 🙄

Here’s the plot, if you can call it that:

Sisters Nora and Agnes reunite with their estranged father, Gustav, a “charismatic” director (read: narcissistic egomaniac) who offers Nora a role in his “comeback” film. When Nora turns it down (smart move!), he gives the part to an “eager young Hollywood star.” Cue the family drama, because who needs original ideas when you can recycle tired tropes? Basically, it’s a story about privileged people with privileged problems. Yawn. 😒

And now, the trailer. Prepare to be underwhelmed. I guarantee you’ll spend the entire time wondering why you’re not watching cat videos instead. 😹

Apparently, this film “won” the Grand Prix at Cannes Film Festival. Because Cannes is known for its impeccable taste. (Just kidding, it’s a festival for the elite to pat themselves on the back.) 🏆

Sentimental Value is out on November 7th. Mark your calendars if you’re a masochist. 🗓️
