Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. It seems like many Republicans running for office in the 2026 midterm elections would prefer to keep President Donald Trump at arm’s length. And can you blame them? Trump keeps reinforcing exactly why they might want to distance themselves from him. Not only is he a historically unpopular president heading into the midterms, but he and his team keep doubling down on the terrible political instincts that landed them in this mess.
It’s not like Trump is making puzzling political moves for the first time, but some of his recent ideas are just mind-boggling. I mean, who thought it was a good idea to use millions of dollars in taxpayer funds to run ads promoting Trump? Or to live stream the execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan? These are the kinds of ideas that make you go “huh?” and wonder what they’re thinking over there.
Bless their hearts, Trump and his team apparently thought these were solid ideas, at least until the polls came out and showed that a whopping 80% of Americans opposed live streaming Hasan’s execution, and 89% thought the taxpayer-funded ads were inappropriate. I guess that’s what happens when you’re not exactly in touch with the average American.
It’s almost as if Trump is trying to do the most unpopular things possible, and then he keeps citing them at his rallies, sometimes at length. I mean, what’s the deal with that? Does he really think that’s going to win him votes? It’s like he’s living in some alternate reality where the rules of politics don’t apply.
Take his recent trade war with Canada, for example. Trump played up his tariffs on Canada at a rally in Arizona, saying “they are brutal, and we don’t take that crap anymore.” But the thing is, Americans opposed those tariffs by a nearly 3-to-1 margin. And as for making Canada the 51st state? Forget about it – 75% or 80% of Americans are opposed to that idea, depending on which poll you look at.
And then there’s Trump’s handling of the economy. He keeps saying that the economy is doing great, that tariffs don’t cause inflation, and that the US is getting richer because of high oil prices. But the numbers just don’t bear that out. A Pew Research Center poll showed that 42% of Americans rated the economy “poor,” and 8 in 10 rated it either “fair” or “poor.” It’s like Trump is living in a fantasy world where the economy is booming, and nobody else can see it.
It’s all rather stunning, if you ask me. Pundits often look for the secret political calculation in the things Trump does, but increasingly, it seems like there just isn’t a real political strategy guiding his actions. It’s all impulse and hubris, largely unchecked by electoral and political concerns. And he only reverses course after polling comes out confirming that 8 in 10 people think a terrible idea is, in fact, a terrible idea.
In conclusion, it’s clear that Trump’s unpopularity is going to be a major liability for Republicans in the 2026 midterm elections. His impulsive decisions and refusal to listen to criticism are only going to make things worse. As I always say, you can’t make this stuff up – and I’m not even sure I’d want to try. So, let’s just sit back, grab another cup of coffee, and enjoy the show – it’s going to be a wild ride, folks!
