Wolcen 2 preview sparks mild interest despite tired action RPG formula

Wolcen 2 preview sparks mild interest despite tired action RPG formula

Well, well, well, looks like WOLCEN Studio is trying to make amends with the gaming community by announcing Wolcen 2, a sequel to the infamous Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem. I’m not sure what’s more surprising, the fact that they’re making a sequel or that they’re actually showing it off at gamescom 2026. As a seasoned gamer, I’ve seen my fair share of broken promises and botched releases, so I’ll believe it when I see it. The pre-alpha test they provided was more like a proof of concept, but I’ll give them credit where credit is due – it’s a start.

A New Beginning, or Just a Rehash?

The demo threw me into the action right away, with a brief narrative context presentation and a choice between a male or female character. I’m hoping that the final product will have a more extensive character creation system, similar to the one in Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem. The game looks great on Unreal 5, which is a significant upgrade from the original’s CryEngine 3. The dark fantasy world of Wolcen is still as gritty and desperate as ever, but I’m not sure if that’s enough to win back the fans who were burned by the first game.

Gameplay and Progression

The gameplay follows a similar vein to the original, with a skill mastery system that gives players total freedom over how they want to customize their skills and gameplay experience. The passive skill tree is also back, with a rune system that allows for slotting of color-coded runes into the various passive slots. It’s similar to Path of Exile, but with a twist. Combat feels a bit clumsy, with delayed or unresponsive ability usage, but the dodge mechanics are smooth and functional. I’m intrigued by the potential of the game, but it’s still early days.

A Long Road to Redemption

WOLCEN Studio has a long way to go to regain the trust of the gaming community. The treatment of Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem was a disaster, and it’s going to take more than just a sequel to make things right. They’ll need to listen carefully to feedback from players and work hard to develop and release a game that meets expectations. I’m cautiously optimistic about Wolcen 2, but I’m not holding my breath. After all, we’ve seen countless games promise the world and deliver nothing but disappointment.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Wolcen 2 is a surprise announcement that has left me feeling cautiously intrigued. While the pre-alpha test was just a proof of concept, it shows promise. However, WOLCEN Studio has a lot of work to do to regain the trust of the gaming community. I’ll be keeping a close eye on the game’s development, but for now, I’m just going to say that it’s a nice try, WOLCEN Studio. Now, let’s see if you can actually deliver on your promises. The gaming community is watching, and we’re not afraid to speak our minds. So, go ahead, try to win us back, but don’t expect us to forget the past anytime soon.
