The House of Representatives has held billionaire investor Leon Black in contempt of Congress, and I’m sipping my coffee, thinking, “what’s the world coming to?” The vote was made because Black refused to comply with subpoenas related to the congressional investigation into Jeffrey Epstein. Now, it’s up to the Justice Department to decide whether to pursue criminal prosecution against Black. I’m no expert, but it sounds like Black is in a bit of a pickle.
The congressional probe has been going on for a while, and it’s brought in at least 19 high-profile witnesses. Many of these witnesses had never been questioned about their ties to Epstein before, but so far, the investigation hasn’t produced the kind of revelations that many lawmakers and Epstein survivors were hoping for. I guess you could say it’s been a bit of a letdown.
The full House voted to hold Black in contempt, which triggers a referral to the Justice Department. This happened after the oversight committee unanimously held Black in contempt on Tuesday for refusing to turn over nondisclosure agreements and appear for a deposition. Black is currently suing the panel and House Oversight Chair James Comer to try to block the lawmakers from obtaining his documents and testimony. It’s a bit of a mess, if you ask me.
House Oversight Chair James Comer said, “I subpoenaed Leon Black for testimony and documents critical to our investigation. But he has refused to comply. Leon Black is legally required to appear for a deposition in front of the Oversight Committee and required to turn over all nondisclosure agreements to which he was a party.” Black’s attorneys, on the other hand, claim that the committee is abusing its power and that the subpoenas are illegitimate.
The attorneys for Black also accused Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the panel, of “touting hate-filled lies about Mr. Black in the media and at every opportunity.” Garcia fired back, saying, “This vote is an important step towards justice and accountability. Leon Black has continued to defy two congressional subpoenas and we need to know why he gave Jeffrey Epstein $180 million dollars.” I’m not sure what’s more surprising, the amount of money or the fact that Black gave it to Epstein in the first place.
Black initially appeared for a voluntary interview in June, but things ended abruptly when Comer issued two subpoenas. Instead of appearing for his deposition, Black filed a lawsuit earlier this month. Black’s lawyers claim that he didn’t know the extent of Epstein’s crimes and that he himself never abused women or had sexual relations with minors. They also said that Black feels terrible for Epstein’s victims and regrets ever doing business with him.
In a statement, Black’s lawyers said, “Mr. Black has repeatedly said that he feels terrible for Epstein’s victims and that he regrets ever doing business with Epstein. He never abused a woman. He never was with an underage woman. He never engaged in sex trafficking. He never paid Epstein for access to women. He was never blackmailed by Epstein. Mr. Black had no knowledge of any of Epstein’s heinous conduct.” I’m not sure if I believe all of that, but I suppose we’ll have to wait and see how this all plays out.
The Justice Department’s release of millions of Epstein files has put a spotlight on many influential and wealthy individuals who had relationships with Epstein. Black is one of them, and it’ll be interesting to see what happens next. In the meantime, I’ll just be over here, sipping my coffee and wondering what other surprises this investigation has in store for us.
In conclusion, the whole situation with Leon Black and the congressional investigation is a bit of a circus. I’m not sure what’s true and what’s not, but one thing’s for sure – it’s been an interesting ride. And who knows, maybe someday we’ll get to the bottom of it all.
