And if that’s not enough, the administration has also been accused of censorship, with efforts to revise or remove interpretive signs and other materials across national parks and federal sites, touching on subjects ranging from slavery and Indigenous history to climate change.
The situation is stressful for the park employees who remain, with morale at an all-time low. Bill Wade, a former ranger who now leads the Association of National Park Rangers, told CNN that morale is the lowest it’s ever been, with employees facing pressure and uncertainty about their jobs. And to make matters worse, the administration has been accused of redirecting funds meant for park staffing to “vanity projects” in Washington, DC, such as the renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and covering statues in gold leaf.
The controversy has also extended to the iconic photograph “Scourged Back,” which depicts the scarred back of a formerly enslaved Louisiana man. As John Garder, the NPCA budget director, put it, “You can systematically destroy the park service in the span of a year or two or four. … But you can’t rebuild it in such a short amount of time.”
