Oh no, the pop-punk world is mourning the loss of a legend 🤯! Chad Gilbert, the guitarist of New Found Glory, has passed away at the age of 45 after a long battle with cancer. I’m shocked, SHOCKED, that a five-year battle with cancer didn’t end well 🙄. I mean, who needs a happy ending, right? 🎸
So, what happened? Well, Gilbert’s passing was announced on social media by his wife, Lisa Cimorelli, and his bandmates, Jordan Pundik, Ian Grushka, Cyrus Bolooki, and Dan O’Connor. They shared a heartfelt message that’s just too long to read, but basically, they’re devastated and grateful for the time they had with him 🙏. Because, you know, that’s what you do when someone dies – you’re devastated and grateful at the same time 🤷♂️.
The Cancer Battle
Let’s take a step back and look at Gilbert’s cancer journey. It all started in December 2021 when he was diagnosed with pheochromocytoma, a rare type of tumor that develops in the adrenal glands. Because, you know, that’s exactly what you want to hear when you’re 40-something 🎉. He underwent surgery, declared himself “cancer free” in January 2022, and then… plot twist! Doctors found another tumor in his spine 🤯. Because one tumor isn’t enough, right? 🤷♂️
Fast forward to August 2025, Gilbert revealed that he was undergoing further treatment for a “small spot in my back.” Yeah, because that’s exactly what you want to hear from your doctor – “you have a small spot” 🤣. And then, earlier this year, he underwent brain surgery after three tumors were discovered 🧠. I mean, at this point, I’m just surprised he didn’t have a tumor in his tumor 🤣.
The Legacy
New Found Glory is often referred to as the “godfathers” of pop-punk, which is just a fancy way of saying they’re old 🙄. But seriously, they’re credited with defining the genre in the early 2000s, and Gilbert’s guitar playing and songwriting were a huge part of that 🎸. He’s survived by his wife, Lisa, his daughter, Lily, his mother, Jackie, and his brother, Brian. Because, you know, family is important, even when you’re a rockstar 🤘.
So, what’s next for New Found Glory? Will they continue to tour and make music without their beloved guitarist? Only time will tell 🤔.
