Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the US economy, and I’ve got to say, it’s a wild ride. Despite gas prices skyrocketing, the economy was still resilient this spring, which is just amazing. I mean, who needs affordable gas when you’ve got a strong economy, right? The gross domestic product grew at a 2.2% inflation-adjusted annualized pace in the second quarter, which is a sharper rebound than previously estimated. I guess all those economists who thought it would be 1.5% were wrong, bless their hearts.
I’m looking at these numbers, and I’ve got to say, it’s a mixed bag. On the one hand, consumer spending and business investment are up, which is great. But on the other hand, last quarter’s GDP reading is lower than the first quarter, when the economy grew at a 2.5% annualized pace. So, it’s like two steps forward, one step back, you know?
I’m reading that economists were expecting the prior reading to hold, according to FactSet consensus estimates. Yeah, because economists are always right, right? I mean, they’re not like weather forecasters or anything, predicting sunny skies and then it starts pouring rain. Anyway, it’s good to see that the economy is still chugging along, despite all the doom and gloom we’re always hearing about.
Now, I know this story is still developing, and I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about it soon. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer is probably thinking about how to spin this story to make it sound more exciting. Maybe something like, “Economy Teeters on Brink of Disaster, But Somehow Manages to Not Collapse!” Yeah, that sounds about right.
In conclusion, the US economy is like a stubborn old mule – it just keeps on going, no matter what. And that’s a good thing, folks. So, let’s all take a deep breath and remember that the sky is not falling, at least not yet. And if it does, we can always just drink more coffee and complain about the price of gas. 😊
