Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about Jon Stewart’s new deal with Comedy Central, and I have to say, it’s a doozy. Stewart will be sticking around as the host of “The Daily Show” through December 2028, which means he’ll be there to cover the next presidential election. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing, but I’m sure it’ll be entertaining. The two-year extension was announced by Skydance on Monday, and it puts to rest any doubts about Stewart’s contract, which was set to expire in December.
Now, I know some of you might be thinking, “Big Elephant, why should I care about Jon Stewart’s contract?” Well, let me tell you, Stewart is one of the most prominent critics of President Donald Trump on TV, and his show is always good for a laugh, even if you don’t agree with his politics. And with this new deal, he’ll be sticking around to poke fun at whoever is in the White House for the next few years.
The new deal means Stewart will continue to host the show on Monday nights, and he’ll also be serving as executive producer. The show’s correspondents will still be hosting on Tuesday through Thursday nights, so it’s business as usual at “The Daily Show”. I have to wonder, though, what kind of impact this will have on the show’s content. Will Stewart be more outspoken than ever, or will he tone it down a notch?
This extension is also a big deal for Skydance, which was formed earlier this month when Paramount Skydance acquired Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s parent company. It’s one of the first major programming announcements from the newly enlarged company, and it shows that they’re committed to keeping “The Daily Show” on the air. George Cheeks, Skydance TV’s co-chair and chief content officer, said in a statement that Jon Stewart is a “generational talent” and that the show is “one of the most influential franchises on television”. That’s high praise, if you ask me.
The decision to keep Stewart comes amid financial and political scrutiny of late-night television. Just last year, Paramount canceled “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”, which was a big deal at the time. Stewart was an executive producer of that show, and he was pretty upset about the cancellation. He even accused Paramount of bending the knee to President Trump, which is a pretty bold claim. I’m not sure if that’s true, but it’s clear that Stewart isn’t afraid to speak his mind.
Stewart originally left “The Daily Show” back in 2015, and he was replaced by Trevor Noah. But when Noah left in December 2022, Stewart returned to the show in 2024, just in time for the presidential election. Now, with this new deal, he’ll be sticking around for the next election, and I’m sure he’ll have plenty to say about it. David Ellison, the chief of Skydance, has been trying to establish close ties with the Trump administration, which has raised some eyebrows. But it looks like that won’t affect Stewart’s job, at least not for now.
In a statement, Ellison said that his company has relationships with politicians from both parties, and that they don’t want to politicize. That’s a pretty diplomatic answer, if you ask me. But I’m sure Stewart will still find ways to poke fun at whoever is in power. After all, that’s what he does best.
In the end, it’s clear that Jon Stewart is a talented guy who knows how to make people laugh. And with this new deal, he’ll be sticking around for a while longer. So, if you’re a fan of “The Daily Show”, you’ve got plenty to look forward to. And if you’re not a fan, well, you can always change the channel. But let’s be real, folks, Stewart is a genius, and his show is always worth watching, even if you don’t agree with his politics. So, here’s to Stewart and his new deal – may he keep making us laugh for years to come!
