Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. So, Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general, Todd Blanche, has decided to formally rescind the president’s $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund. This comes after Senate Republicans, specifically John Cornyn and Thom Tillis, threatened to block his nomination over the controversial agreement. I mean, who wouldn’t want to block a fund that would offer taxpayer money to people who claimed they were victims of weaponization by the federal government, including those involved in the January 6, 2021, US Capitol riot? It sounds like a totally reasonable use of taxpayer dollars.
I guess Blanche finally realized that this fund was a major sticking point for his nomination, and he decided to address the concerns of the Senate Republicans. He posted on X that he and his team had met with committee members and senators, and they had good faith discussions, which resulted in the decision to rescind the fund. I’m sure it had nothing to do with the fact that Trump threatened to temporarily pull the nomination and renominate Blanche after Cornyn and Tillis leave the Senate next year.
The document released by Blanche also limits the addendum to the agreement that offers the president and his family immunity from tax investigations. Because, you know, that’s not a controversial thing at all. Cornyn had been pushing for Blanche to explicitly acknowledge that the immunity only applies to past tax investigations, and it seems like Blanche has finally agreed to that.
It’s interesting to see how this whole thing has played out. Trump was defending the “anti-weaponization” fund just hours before Blanche’s announcement, saying that if the Senate doesn’t confirm Blanche, he will put the idea “back on the table.” I’m sure that had nothing to do with the fact that Cornyn and Tillis were opposed to the fund. Trump also said that the fund would be a reimbursement for the pain his supporters and allies suffered. Because, you know, they’re the real victims here.
The White House has been reached out to for comment on Blanche’s order, but so far, no response. I’m sure they’re just busy trying to figure out how to spin this whole thing. Meanwhile, CNN is still trying to get a statement from Tillis’ office, because, of course, they want to get to the bottom of this totally-not-controversial story.
In the end, it seems like Blanche has managed to save his nomination by rescinding the “anti-weaponization” fund. But I’m sure this isn’t the last we’ve heard of this story. After all, as the great philosopher once said, “you can’t make this stuff up.” And I’m sure Trump will find a way to make this all about him again. So, stay tuned, folks, it’s going to be a wild ride. And remember, if you’re going to make a controversial decision, just make sure you have a good coffee cup to spill when you read about it in the news.
