Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. So, it seems like Todd Blanche’s nomination for attorney general is hitting some roadblocks. Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska has announced she’ll be voting against him, which is a pretty big deal. I mean, the guy needs all the Republican votes he can get, and now he’s lost Murkowski. Bless their hearts, they’re trying to get him confirmed, but it’s not looking good.
The White House is trying to put on a brave face, with the press secretary saying they’re not surprised by Murkowski’s decision, but it’s still “disappointing.” Yeah, I bet it is. They were really counting on her vote. Now, all eyes are on Sen. Bill Cassidy, who’s still undecided. If he votes against Blanche, it’s pretty much game over.
It’s all about the so-called anti-weaponization fund, which Blanche tried to rescind, but Murkowski isn’t buying it. She thinks it’s just a ploy to get confirmed, and then he’ll bring it back. You can’t blame her for being skeptical, given the way things have been going in Washington lately. The fund was supposed to provide taxpayer money to people who claimed they were victims of malicious prosecution by the federal government, including those involved in the January 6, 2021, US Capitol riot. Yeah, that’s a whole can of worms.
Blanche has been trying to charm his way into the good graces of senators, meeting with them and signing documents, but it’s not working out so well. He even took a trip to Alaska to meet with local leaders, which is pretty impressive, I’ll give him that. But Murkowski is still not convinced. She says the Justice Department has been politicized, and she doesn’t think Blanche is the right guy to fix it.
Trump is weighing in, of course, saying that Blanche is a “great gentleman” and that it would be “very sad” if he’s not confirmed. Yeah, because that’s exactly what we need, more of Trump’s opinions. He’s also criticizing Murkowski, which is no surprise. The guy loves to pick fights.
In the end, it’s all just a big mess. Blanche’s nomination is on shaky ground, and it’s anyone’s guess what will happen next. But hey, at least it’s entertaining. As I always say, you can’t make this stuff up. The drama, the intrigue, the politicking – it’s all just so deliciously ridiculous. And in the end, that’s what makes American politics so fascinating, right? So, grab some popcorn, folks, and enjoy the show. It’s going to be a wild ride.
