Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the release of American Robert Gilman from Russian detention, and I have to say, it’s a miracle he’s alive. According to three US officials, a Russian official, and an organization advocating on behalf of his family, Gilman was released on Tuesday. I’m not sure what’s more surprising, the fact that he was released or that the Russians actually admitted he was “near death” just days ago. I mean, bless their hearts, they’re not exactly known for their transparency.
I’m reading that Gilman, a former Marine, had been detained since 2022, and his health had been a major concern. An advocate warned that he was “near death” just days ago, and I’m thinking, wow, that’s quite a turnaround. A US State Department spokesperson said Gilman was released on humanitarian grounds, and I’m wondering what that really means. Did the Russians just get tired of holding him, or was there some behind-the-scenes deal made?
Kirill Dmitriev, a Kremlin special envoy, said Gilman was freed from detention “for humanitarian reasons,” and I’m raising an eyebrow. You can’t make this stuff up, folks. It sounds like the Russians are trying to spin this as some kind of goodwill gesture, but I’m not buying it. I’m sure there’s more to the story than we’re being told.
I’m also reading that Gilman is receiving medical care and is being transported back to the United States on a specialized medical plane. His mother, who had traveled to Russia to try to see her son, is with him, and I’m thinking, thank goodness. It’s about time this family got some good news. Eric Lebson, the chief strategy officer of Global Reach, told CNN that Gilman had fallen into a “dissociative stupor” more than six weeks ago, and I’m shuddering at the thought. The poor guy had been subjected to physical and psychological torture, and it’s a miracle he’s still alive.
Gilman’s sister, Lexie Hudson, is thanking US President Donald Trump for “saving (her) brother’s life,” and I’m thinking, okay, that’s interesting. I’m not sure what Trump had to do with it, but I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough. Hudson said, “There is no other reason that Robert is alive today other than that President Trump heard about the case and took action,” and I’m wondering what kind of action that was. I’m also reading that she thanked Democratic Sen. Ed Markey, so maybe it was a bipartisan effort.
Gilman was arrested in January 2022, and Russian officials alleged that he was drunk and got into an altercation with a police officer. But Lebson denied that account, saying Gilman was hit by the police, got sick, and accidentally kicked the officer. I’m thinking, wow, that’s quite a difference in stories. Gilman was sentenced to four and a half years in prison, and I’m glad he’s not going to have to serve that time.
Numerous Americans remain detained in Russia, including Andre Khachatoorian, Olga Jezler, Chuck Zimmerman, David Barnes, Aleksander Antonov, and Stephen Hubbard. The State Department spokesperson said they hope Gilman’s release “leads to the release of Americans unjustly held in Russia,” and I’m thinking, amen to that. It’s about time we got some of our people back.
In conclusion, it’s a good day when we can report on an American being released from detention, especially when it’s a miracle they’re alive. I’m glad Gilman is on his way back to the United States, and I hope he gets the treatment and support he needs. And to the Russians, I say, thanks for finally doing the right thing, I guess. Now, if you could just release the rest of our people, that would be great. As I finish my coffee, I’m thinking, it’s a crazy world we live in, folks.
