It seems like he’s trying to unify his party after a bruising primary, and I’ve got to say, it’s a bit of a surprise to see him pivoting to a more moderate tone. I mean, this is the same guy who’s been leading the charge on the culture wars in Texas, but now he’s talking about tax deductions and appearing with state lawmakers who once voted to impeach him. You can’t make this stuff up, right? Paxton’s even going so far as to appeal to the Washington establishment for financial help, which is a bit of a departure from his usual anti-establishment rhetoric.
It’s clear that Paxton is trying to shore up support from Republicans after his late endorsement from President Donald Trump helped him defeat longtime Sen. John Cornyn in a May runoff. And it’s not just Paxton who’s worried – Texas Republicans are openly fretting about losing a statewide race for the first time in three decades. Sen. Ted Cruz has even said that the race could be decided by a point or two, which would be tighter than his own close call against Democrat Beto O’Rourke in 2018.
Paxton’s campaign has been touting his latest congressional endorsements, including the backing of 18 out of the 24 Republican members in the state’s US House delegation. But despite this, polling shows that Paxton still trails Democrat James Talarico in consolidating support from his party’s voters. Talarico, on the other hand, has been staking his campaign on a populist economic message that cuts across party lines, and he’s even gotten the endorsement of some prominent Republicans, like former Tarrant County judge Glen Whitley.
I’ve got to say, it’s a bit rich to see Paxton complaining about fundraising difficulties when his campaign has only spent $100,000 on ads compared to Talarico’s $21 million. And with a super PAC supporting Talarico sitting on nearly $13 million, it’s clear that Paxton is going to need some serious outside help if he wants to keep up. But despite all this, Paxton’s still confident that he can win, and he’s even debuted a new economic plan that proposes new and increased tax deductions for health care, housing, and children.
As I was reading about Paxton’s unity process, I couldn’t help but think that it’s a bit of a delicate dance. On the one hand, he’s trying to appeal to moderate Republicans and independents, but on the other hand, he’s still got to keep his base happy. It’s a tough balancing act, and I’m not sure he’s going to be able to pull it off. But hey, at least he’s trying, right?
Paxton’s even gotten some help from some of his former intra-party detractors, like state Rep. Jeff Leach, who once called him a “sophisticated criminal” and helped lead the 2023 impeachment against him. And with Gov. Greg Abbott taking the lead on rallying Republicans, it’s possible that Paxton could still pull off a win. But I’ve got to say, it’s going to be a long shot.
In conclusion, the Texas Senate race is shaping up to be a real nail-biter, folks. With Paxton’s pivot to a more moderate tone and Talarico’s populist economic message, it’s anyone’s game. And let’s be real, the fact that Paxton’s campaign is warning supporters that Talarico is “trying to convince people that he’s a moderate Democrat when he’s not” is just a bit too rich. I mean, come on, guys, can’t you just make up your minds? Anyway, I’ll be keeping an eye on this one, and I’m sure it’ll be a wild ride.
