Netflix Exec Grilled by MAGA Senators Over ‘Woke’ Content — Because Apparently Conservatives Can’t Handle Different Opinions
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos found himself in the crosshairs of right-wing lawmakers Tuesday during a Senate hearing about his company’s $83 billion deal to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming assets. Instead of discussing boring stuff like antitrust laws or consumer prices, several conservative senators decided to grill Sarandos about Netflix’s “woke” content and supposed promotion of “transgender ideology” in children’s programming.
Sen. Eric Schmitt accused Netflix of creating “the wokest content in the history of the world” and claimed the streaming giant has “made a habit of promoting DEI and wokeness” while “oversexualizing for kids.” Because apparently nothing says family values like baseless accusations during a business hearing.
When Sarandos pushed back, noting Netflix has “no political agenda” and offers programming “left, right and center,” Sen. Josh Hawley doubled down with claims that “almost half” of Netflix’s children’s content features “highly controversial, highly sexualized material.” Hawley didn’t provide any evidence for this statistic, but hey, when has that ever stopped a Republican senator from making wild accusations?
The attacks mirror talking points from MAGA influencers and a conservative report originally created by the Heritage Foundation, which accused Netflix of “social engineering through entertainment.” Because God forbid a streaming service offers diverse stories that might actually reflect the real world!
Conservative podcasters have been urging President Trump to block the merger, claiming it would create a monopoly that would “push trans ideology, race guilt, and anti-family messaging straight into your living room.” Never mind that Netflix’s entire business model depends on appealing to diverse audiences so people keep paying for subscriptions.
Sen. Ted Cruz even called Netflix a “left-wing company” because of its deal with Barack and Michelle Obama, warning the merger would create “a propaganda outlet pushing one particular political view.” Yes, because the best way to fight perceived liberal bias is with actual government interference in business. Classic conservative logic!
In the end, Sarandos did his best to explain reality to lawmakers living in their own alternative universe, but good luck convincing people who think “woke” is a valid business critique. Maybe next time they’ll focus on actual policy issues instead of culture war nonsense. But let’s be honest — where’s the fun in that?
