Star Wars: KOTOR Remake Still in Development, Apparently

In a stunning revelation that has sent shockwaves through the galaxy (and by shockwaves, we mean a barely audible murmur), someone somewhere confirmed that the long-rumored Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is still technically happening. Yes, folks, that thing announced in 2021 that we’ve all collectively forgotten about is allegedly still being worked on.

In an interview that was probably scheduled three years ago, Saber Interactive’s Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits dropped this bombshell: “Yes, it is still in development. That’s all I can say.”

Wow, Tim. Really pulling back the curtain on this one. I bet you had to sign a waiver just to say those six words. The gaming world is forever changed.

For those of you who’ve aged significantly since this game was announced (it’s been five years, congratulations on your new wrinkles), here’s the rollercoaster so far: Aspyr Media was originally developing it, then they got yanked off the project like a Jedi getting his lightsaber stolen, and now some studio called Mad Head Games is supposedly in charge. Mad Head Games, by the way, is known for Hellraiser: Revival, which is either perfect for a KOTOR remake or absolutely terrible, depending on whether you want your Star Wars with extra existential dread.

Oh, and remember when Aspyr promised that KOTOR II Restored Content Mod for Switch and then basically said “oops, jk” and didn’t deliver it? Yeah, that happened too. Good times.

But wait, there’s more! According to some folks who probably spend too much time in gaming forums, there are plans for a KOTOR II remake as well, codenamed “Juliet.” Because nothing says “exciting video game remake” like naming it after Shakespeare’s most famous tragedy.

Meanwhile, Disney is throwing Star Wars games at the wall to see what sticks. We’ve got a new Jedi game coming (because why not), Star Wars Galactic Racer (podracing but again), Zero Company (probably some kind of tactical shooter, who knows), and something called Fate of the Old Republic from Casey Hudson, the guy who brought you the ending to Mass Effect 3. Perfect.

So yeah, the KOTOR remake is still a thing that exists in some alternate dimension where game development timelines make sense. Will it actually come out? Will it be good? Will it be canceled next week? Your guess is as good as mine.

The Force is clearly sleeping through this one. 😴

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake is currently in development, somewhere, maybe, we think.
