Oh great, E Jean Carroll wants 5 mil now

I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest development in the E. Jean Carroll vs. Donald Trump case, and folks, it’s getting interesting. Magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll is asking a judge to release more than $5 million to her, just a day after the Supreme Court rejected President Donald Trump’s effort to challenge a jury’s finding that he sexually abused and defamed her. I mean, you can’t make this stuff up, right? The Supreme Court’s decision is a big deal, and it’s not every day you see a president’s legal options getting exhausted like this.

So, Carroll’s lawyers are asking the trial judge to expedite the briefing schedule on her motion to release the funds, saying both sides previously agreed to do it after the nation’s highest court ruled. They’re saying that given the cost to Carroll of further delay in this nearly four-year-old litigation, there’s good cause to adopt a modestly compressed briefing schedule as to payment of the judgment. Yeah, because four years is a long time, and I’m sure Carroll is eager to get this over with.

Carroll’s attorneys are asking for all briefings to be completed by July 10, which seems like a pretty tight deadline. But hey, when you’re dealing with a case like this, I guess you want to get things moving. On Monday, the Supreme Court refused to hear Trump’s appeal, which alleged the trial judge made errors when he allowed certain evidence to be shown to the jury. That decision exhausted Trump’s legal options for challenging the ruling, which would normally allow for the funds to be transmitted.

However, Trump has vowed to continue to fight, because why not, right? One long-shot option is to ask the Supreme Court to reconsider, and he has about 25 days to file that paperwork. I’m no lawyer, but it seems like a bit of a stretch. Carroll’s lawyers said in a separate filing Tuesday night that Trump’s legal team asked her to agree to hold off on collecting the money so he could ask the Supreme Court to reconsider. Her lawyers rejected that request, which doesn’t surprise me.

The lawyers wrote, “Accordingly, after four years of litigation across every level of the federal court system, it is time for this case to end. And under the Court’s Stipulation and Order, Carroll is now entitled to obtain payment of the money due under the judgment.” Yeah, it’s time to put this baby to bed, and I’m sure Carroll is ready to move on with her life. After the jury’s verdict in 2023, Trump was required to deposit $5.5 million, the size of the award plus interest, into a court-controlled account.

Trump has said he will appeal a related $83 million judgment to the Supreme Court. A jury awarded Carroll $83 million in damages after finding Trump defamed her for his repeated statements that he did not know who she was, did not assault her, and his claims she made up the allegation to sell a book. That petition is expected over the next few days, so stay tuned, folks. This case is far from over, and I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about it in the coming weeks.

So, to sum it all up, E. Jean Carroll is trying to get her hands on some money that a jury says she’s owed, and Donald Trump is trying to appeal his way out of it. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’ve got a big ol’ mess on our hands. In the end, it’s just another day in the wild world of American politics, and I’m just here for the coffee and the entertainment, folks. 🙄
