Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. Concerns are mounting about the wellbeing of an American detained in Russia since 2022, with an advocate alleging he has been subjected to physical and psychological torture. Robert Gilman is the guy’s name, and according to Eric Lebson, the chief strategy officer of Global Reach, an advocacy organization representing his family, Gilman is “near death” after falling into a dissociative stupor more than six weeks ago. I mean, that’s some scary stuff right there.
Now, I’m no expert, but it seems like the US government is taking this situation pretty seriously. A State Department spokesperson said they’re “deeply concerned” about Gilman’s “health and continued detention in Russia.” They’ve even raised his case with the Russian government and requested his release on humanitarian grounds. Bless their hearts, I hope they can get him out of there soon.
So, what happened to this guy, you ask? Well, apparently, he was forced to take psychotropic drugs and told lies about his family being beaten up and about being forgotten by the United States. Lebson told CNN that Gilman was moved from the hospital in his prison to the psychiatric ward of a civilian hospital, where he’s being fed through a tube and is handcuffed to his hospital bed, even though he’s not cognizant. That’s just awful.
Now, I know some folks might be thinking, “What’s the big deal? He’s just a guy who got in trouble in Russia.” But the thing is, Gilman’s family is really worried about him. His sister, Lexie Hudson, said she’s more afraid for her brother than she’s been since this whole ordeal started. She’s worried that she might never see him again if the Russians don’t release him soon. I can understand why she’d be worried, considering what happened to that poor Otto Warmbier guy.
You can’t make this stuff up, folks. The potential death of an American in Russian custody would be a real test for the US’ relationship with Moscow. I mean, we all know that relationship is already pretty rocky. Gilman’s family is calling on the US government to make a deal with the Russians to get him released ASAP.
Gilman was arrested in January 2022, and the Russians alleged that he was drunk and got into an altercation with a police officer. But Lebson denies this, saying Gilman was hit by the police, got sick, and accidentally kicked the officer. Whatever happened, it’s clear that Gilman’s in a bad spot, and we need to get him out of there.
Gilman is one of multiple former US Marines who have been arrested in Russia, including Trevor Reed and Paul Whelan. There are also several other Americans who remain detained in Russia, including Andre Khachatoorian, Olga Jezler, Chuck Zimmerman, David Barnes, Aleksander Antonov, and Stephen Hubbard. Only Hubbard has been designated by the US State Department as wrongfully detained.
In conclusion, this whole situation is just a big mess, folks. I hope the US government can negotiate Gilman’s release soon, or we might be facing a real diplomatic crisis. And let’s be real, who needs more drama with Russia, right? 🙄 I just hope Robert Gilman gets to come home to his family soon, and we can put this whole ordeal behind us.
