Saudi Arabia Just Got a Little Less Fun for Diplomats Apparently

Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest drama in the Middle East, and let me tell you, it’s a wild ride. The US State Department has ordered non-essential staff and family members to leave the embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, due to the escalating strikes by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. I mean, who doesn’t love a good game of “let’s evacuate the embassy” on a Wednesday morning?

The State Department spokesperson, Tommy Pigott, wrote on X that the department has issued an ordered departure for non-emergency US government employees and their family members in Saudi Arabia. He cited the increasing hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including attacks on civilian airports and critical infrastructure, resulting in civilian casualties and travel disruptions. You can’t make this stuff up, folks – it’s like a real-life action movie.

While the State Department is drawing down its footprint in Saudi Arabia, other US diplomatic posts in the region are also adjusting their staffing in response to the Houthi threat. A source told CNN that this is all about the Houthis, because, well, it’s not like they’re just making it up as they go along. The State Department official said, “This is about the Houthis,” which is just a fancy way of saying, “We’re taking this seriously, folks.”

The State Department also warned US citizens about potential attacks on airports and general travel disruptions. Because, you know, who doesn’t love a good travel warning to spice up their Wednesday? The alert came after a series of deadly Houthi attacks targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi military facilities, oil infrastructure, and maritime traffic. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and I’m inclined to agree.

US government employees working in Saudi Arabia now require special authorization from the Chief of Mission to use any airport in Saudi Arabia, following recent missile and UAV attacks on airports in the Kingdom. Because, you know, using an airport should be a thrilling adventure. The alert said, “U.S. government employees working in Saudi Arabia require special authorization from Chief of Mission to use any airport in Saudi Arabia,” which is just a fancy way of saying, “We’re watching you, folks.”

Saudi-backed forces have expanded operations against Houthi positions across multiple frontlines, while Saudi air power continues to provide military cover. On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia said it intercepted at least seven drones, including one targeting the Shaybah oil field, which killed two expatriate workers and injured two others. Bless their hearts, it’s a tough time to be in the oil business.

The US has stepped up its support for the kingdom militarily by boosting intelligence and targeting support. But Saudi Arabia has been asking for more offensive support, and so far, the President has decided against striking the Houthis. You know, because that would be a totally reasonable and not-at-all-controversial decision. Other allies, like the UK, have also stepped up support, deploying fighter jets to defend Saudi Arabia against Houthi attacks. Egypt has also pledged “all necessary and possible forms of support,” which is just a fancy way of saying, “We’ve got your back, Saudi Arabia.”

In conclusion, folks, it’s been a wild ride in the Middle East, and I’m not even done with my coffee yet. The US State Department is evacuating non-essential staff, the Houthis are launching attacks, and everyone’s trying to figure out what’s next. As I always say, you can’t make this stuff up – but somehow, the news always seems to find a way to surprise us. And on that note, I’m going to refill my coffee cup and see what other excitement the day brings. 🙄
