Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney taking a veiled swipe at US President Donald Trump, and I’ve got to say, it’s a beautiful thing. Carney is insisting that his proposal to deepen ties with the European Union isn’t aimed at creating a new, more polite geopolitical bloc. Because, you know, the world really needs a more polite bloc. I mean, who doesn’t love a good game of diplomatic nice-nice? Carney told EU lawmakers in France, “I’m not proposing a third bloc in order to become a great power rival, only with better manners.” Oh, snap, I guess that’s a bit of a jab at Trump, but I’ll let it slide because, well, manners are important.
Carney went on to say, “We do not seek power to dominate others. On the contrary, we are pursuing resilience so no one can control our open markets, impair our sovereignty, threaten territorial integrity or undermine our freedoms, our democracies, our rule of law.” You know, the usual – freedom, democracy, and all that jazz. It’s like he’s trying to win a prize for most buzzwords used in a single sentence. But hey, I’m not complaining, it’s a nice sentiment.
During his speech, Carney occasionally spoke in French, because, you know, Europe. He laid out the case for closer cooperation to build resilience against what he called “new storms,” citing climate change, the weaponization of trade, and the erosion of democratic norms. Sounds like a real party, doesn’t it? I mean, who doesn’t love talking about climate change and trade wars over a cup of coffee?
Carney also said, “Europe and Canada are stronger together.” Aw, that’s cute. It’s like they’re trying to start a new trend – international cooperation is the new black. And it seems like European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is on board, proposing that Canada become the bloc’s first “associate member.” But, of course, Trump had to go and threaten some tariffs, because why not? It’s not like he’s busy with, I don’t know, running a country or something.
You can’t make this stuff up, folks. I mean, the drama, the intrigue, the veiled swipes – it’s all just so deliciously entertaining. And the best part is, it’s all happening while I’m sipping my coffee and reading the news. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, but I just think it’s a great way to start the day.
In conclusion, it seems like Carney and the EU are trying to start a new club, and Trump is not invited. But hey, who needs an invitation when you can just tweet about it, right? Anyway, it’s all just a big game of diplomatic chess, and I’m happy to be watching from the sidelines with my coffee in hand. And let’s be real, if this whole “polite geopolitical bloc” thing takes off, I’m totally joining – who wouldn’t want to be part of a club that’s all about being nice and playing by the rules? 🙄
