Folks, it looks like the FBI is really digging deep into the 2020 election in Georgia, and I’m not sure if I should be impressed or amused. According to CNN, the FBI has ramped up its investigation by dedicating more personnel to what an internal memo refers to as a “priority.” I guess that’s one way to describe it. The memo calls for the FBI to quickly bring in an additional 260 FBI intelligence officials, on top of those agents already working in the Atlanta area. That’s a whole lot of agents, if you ask me.
I mean, I’m no expert, but it sounds like the FBI is taking this investigation very seriously. Some of the intelligence personnel will work on the investigation remotely, which is probably a good thing, considering the whole COVID-19 situation. A law enforcement official familiar with the investigation told CNN that these personnel are skilled at analyzing data, so I’m sure they’ll get to the bottom of things.
The FBI declined to comment for this story, which is no surprise. I mean, why would they want to comment on an ongoing investigation? That would just be crazy talk. But hey, at least we know they’re working hard to get to the truth. The plans for the investigative surge come amid weeks of efforts by the Justice Department and Trump administration to ramp up election-related investigations. It’s like they’re trying to make sure everything is above board, or something.
Kurt Olsen, a 2020 election denier who had been tapped by the White House to investigate that election, made the referral in January that reinvigorated a recent criminal probe. Later that month, the FBI served a warrant at an elections office in Fulton County, Georgia, seizing 700 boxes of election materials. I’m not sure what they’re looking for, but I’m sure it’s all very exciting.
The probe in Georgia is the centerpiece of President Donald Trump’s so-called “election integrity” efforts and baseless claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him. It’s unclear the extent the FBI will be looking at that election, versus others in the state. But hey, at least they’re trying to get to the bottom of things. Federal prosecutors have also dug into votes from subsequent national elections, and charged a small number of people they say were improperly registered to vote.
The Justice Department, using a grand jury recently, also has demanded details about thousands of election workers who assisted Fulton County, which includes Atlanta, in the 2020 vote-counting. It’s like they’re trying to make sure everyone did their job correctly. I’m not sure what they’ll find, but I’m sure it’ll be interesting. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’ve got a full-blown investigation on our hands.
In conclusion, the FBI is investigating the 2020 election in Georgia, and it’s all very serious business. I’m sure they’ll get to the bottom of things, and we’ll all be able to rest easy knowing that our elections are safe and secure. But until then, I’ll just be over here, sipping my coffee and enjoying the show. And who knows, maybe they’ll even find something juicy, but I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were you. 😊
