Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading this crazy story about a toddler who was declared dead, only to be found alive in a hospital morgue. I mean, you can’t make this stuff up. A 18-month-old boy was discovered in a backyard pool in a Phoenix suburb in February, and after being treated by staff, he was taken to the hospital’s “cold room” – yeah, that’s a real thing – after being pronounced dead. But here’s the kicker: about five hours later, police were notified that the child was indeed breathing, and he was flown to another hospital. I’m no medical expert, but I’m pretty sure that’s not how it’s supposed to work.
I’m reading through the police records, and it seems that two Gilbert police officers saw possible signs of life multiple times, but the child was still taken to the hospital’s “cold room”. I’m thinking, what’s going on here? Did they not get the memo that this kid was still kicking? And then I see this quote from Dr. Aryan Toosi, who told an officer, “Please do your thing and let me do my thing. I went to medical school for a reason.” Okay, doc, I get it, you’re a professional, but maybe double-checking for a pulse wouldn’t hurt, huh?
So, the first responders were dispatched to the home at about 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 8 in response to a reported drowning. They performed life-saving measures on the child before taking him to a hospital, where the boy was pronounced dead about an hour later. But, as we now know, that wasn’t the end of the story. The boy ultimately survived and has been released, and I’m sure his parents are just thrilled to have him back. Although, they might be in a bit of trouble, as Gilbert police are recommending negligence charges against them. Apparently, there was a strong odor of marijuana at the home and open doors that could have allowed unsupervised access to the pool. Not exactly the most responsible parenting, if you ask me.
The hospital, Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, said in a statement that they conducted “a thorough review of all aspects of the care provided to learn what happened and to make meaningful changes to strengthen our care.” Yeah, I’d say that’s
