Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest news, and I’ve got to say, this one’s a doozy. Kevin Rideout, an American missionary, has been released after being held captive in Niger for nine whole months. I mean, can you imagine being stuck in a situation like that for almost a year? Bless their hearts. According to SIM International Director Phil Bauman, Rideout is in good health and will soon be reunited with his family, which is just fantastic news.
I’m reading through this article, and it says Rideout was kidnapped from outside his home in Niamey, Niger, back in October 2025. Three unidentified men seized him and headed towards the Tillaberi region, where Islamist militants are known to be active. You can’t make this stuff up, folks. The US Embassy in Niger even warned of a “heightened concern about the threat of kidnapping” the day after he was taken.
Now, I’m not sure what’s more surprising, the fact that Rideout was released after all this time or that the FBI is being tight-lipped about the whole thing. According to The New York Times, Rideout was in FBI custody and in good health, but the FBI declined to comment when contacted by CNN. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and I can see why.
The article goes on to say that Niger has faced a surge in attacks from militant groups linked to al Qaeda and the so-called Islamic State. It’s a pretty volatile region, to say the least. In May, the US and Nigerian forces even killed a senior ISIS commander, Abu-Bilal al-Minuki. I’m just glad that Rideout is safe and sound, and I hope he gets to enjoy a nice, quiet cup of coffee after his ordeal.
It’s worth noting that the details of Rideout’s release are still sketchy, and it’s not clear which group was holding him or how he was released. The Times reported that he may have recently moved, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what comes out in the wash. CNN has reached out to the White House, the State Department, and the Pentagon for comment, but so far, no word.
In conclusion, it’s great to see Kevin Rideout safe and sound after his nine-month captivity. I’m sure he’s got some stories to tell, and I hope he gets to share them with his family and friends soon.
