Overhyped Movies Overpriced Popcorn and a Whole Lot of Pretentious Film Critics at TIFF 2026

default

And, honestly, who isn’t excited? I mean, it’s not like we have anything better to do than watch a bunch of movies and pretend to be film critics 🤣. The festival is set to open with Siân Heder’s Being Heumann, which is apparently about some inspiring story, but let’s be real, we’re all just here for the free popcorn 🍿👀. And, of course, it will close with Villeneuve: The Rise of a Legend, because who doesn’t love a good biopic about a Canadian Formula 1 driver? 🏎️🇨🇦

But wait, there’s more! 🎁 The festival will also feature a bunch of other movies, including Love of Your Life, I Play Rocky, and Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo. Because, you know, the world was just missing a Bad Lieutenant remake 🙄. And, let’s not forget about The Only Living Pickpocket in New York, which sounds like a real laugh riot 😂. I mean, who wouldn’t want to watch a movie about a pickpocket in New York? It’s not like we’ve seen that before or anything 🙄.

And, because the festival organizers clearly have a sense of humor, they’ve also included a bunch of documentaries, including Rapinoe, which is about the US soccer star Megan Rapinoe, because, you know, she’s just so fascinating 🙄. I mean, who wouldn’t want to watch a whole movie about a soccer player? 🤷‍♀️ And, of course, there’s also Edward Said: Between Worlds, which is about the life of Palestine-American writer Edward Said, because, you know, that’s exactly what the world is missing – another movie about a writer 📚.

But, let’s get to the good stuff 🍿. The Centrepiece program will feature 54 titles from 40 countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, and Chad, because, you know, those are all countries that are just bursting with great movies 🌎. And, among the filmmakers taking part are Valeska Grisebach, Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, and Diego Luna, because, you know, they’re all just so talented and stuff 🙄.

And, because the festival organizers want to make sure that everyone has something to watch, they’ve also included a bunch of TV shows in the Primetime program, including Slow Horses, Carrie, and Oxygen Masks Will (Not) Drop Automatically, because, you know, who doesn’t love a good TV show? 📺. I mean, it’s not like we have anything better to do than watch TV all day 🛋️.

But, wait, there’s more! 🎁 The festival will also feature a bunch of short films, including The Spectacular Death of Prisca, Fried Chicken & Strip Checkers, and The End, because, you know, short films are just the best 🎥. I mean, who needs a full-length movie when you can just watch a bunch of short films and pretend to be a film critic? 🤣

And, finally, the festival will run from September 10-20, 2026, so mark your calendars 📅. Or, you know, just forget about it and watch Netflix instead 📺. I mean, it’s not like the festival is going to be any good or anything 🙄. But, hey, if you’re into that sort of thing, you can visit tiff.net for more information 🤷‍♀️.

So, there you have it 🎉. The 51st Toronto International Film Festival is coming, and it’s going to be a real blast 🎊. Or, you know, not 🙄. Either way, it’s going to be a great excuse to eat some popcorn and pretend to be a film critic 🍿👀. 🎥👍
