Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. A mass shooting in downtown Minneapolis has left at least seven people injured, including two police officers. The shooter, unfortunately, was confirmed dead at the scene. I mean, what a terrible way to go, but I guess that’s a good thing for the people of Minneapolis. Two law enforcement officials told CNN about the shooter’s demise, so I’m taking their word for it.
The two officers who were injured are in stable condition, which is great news. They’re being treated at the Hennepin County Medical Center, and I’m sure they’ll be back on their feet in no time. Seven patients were brought to a nearby hospital, with three of them undergoing surgery for gunshot wounds. That’s just awful, and I hope they all make a full recovery.
The police have asked people to avoid the area of 15 East Grant Street, which is probably a good idea. I mean, who wants to be around a crime scene, right? Around 5:45 p.m. local time, dozens of police cars and officers surrounded the scene, and pedestrians were still walking around the area. I guess some people just can’t resist a good spectacle.
The surrounding area is home to an apartment complex, the Minneapolis Convention Center, hotels, and a hospital. So, it’s a pretty busy area, and I’m sure the shooting caused quite a commotion. Nearby University of St. Thomas’ Minneapolis campus even issued a shelter-in-place order, just to be safe. Better safe than sorry, right?
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said that his public safety team is responding to the shooting, and state officials are on the ground. He also thanked law enforcement for their hard work in keeping everyone safe. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said that neighboring police agencies, as well as the Minnesota State Patrol, are working closely with the Minneapolis Police Department. And, of course, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are also responding to the shooting. It’s a real team effort, folks.
As the investigation continues, I’m sure we’ll learn more about what happened. For now, let’s just hope that everyone involved makes a full recovery. And to the people of Minneapolis, I say, stay safe out there. This is a developing story, and I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about it in the coming days.
