Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. Former CVS executive Helena Foulkes is projected to win the Democratic nomination for governor of Rhode Island, defeating incumbent Gov. Dan McKee. And let me tell you, it’s all about the bridge – the Washington Bridge, to be specific. The westbound lanes have been closed since 2023 due to concerns of collapse, and it’s been a major headache for commuters. I mean, who hasn’t been stuck in traffic at some point, right? But this bridge closure has been a real pain in the neck for McKee, and it’s clearly hurt his chances with voters.
The bridge closure has been a disaster for McKee, and Foulkes capitalized on the issue to win the primary. It’s not like McKee didn’t try to defend himself, though. In the end, it’s all about competence, folks. Voters want to know that their leaders can get the job done, and McKee’s handling of the bridge situation has raised some serious questions about his ability to do just that. Foulkes, on the other hand, has promised to bring a new level of competence to the governor’s office, and voters are giving her a chance to prove it.
