In a shocking interview with Joann Butler In Studio With…, MÖTLEY CRÜE bassist and main songwriter Nikki Sixx dropped a bombshell: the band is ditching the traditional full-length album format in favor of releasing singles and EPs whenever the mood strikes them. Because, you know, who needs a cohesive album when you can just throw a bunch of songs at the wall and see what sticks? 🤷♂️
According to Sixx, the band’s latest EP, “Cancelled”, which was released in October 2024, is a prime example of this new approach. The EP features three songs, including a cover of the BEASTIE BOYS classic “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)” and the original tracks “Dogs Of War” and the title track “Cancelled”. All three songs were recorded in April 2023 with longtime producer Bob Rock, because who doesn’t love a good ol’ fashioned recording session with a seasoned pro? 🎸
But wait, there’s more! Sixx also revealed that the band’s deal with Big Machine sees them working together again after their 2014 project “Nashville Outlaws: A Tribute To Mötley Crüe”, which featured CRÜE tracks covered by country stars RASCAL FLATTS, FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE, Darius Rucker, and more. Because what’s more metal than a bunch of country artists covering MÖTLEY CRÜE songs? 🤠
The Evolution of MÖTLEY CRÜE
Sixx explained that the band’s music has always been a reflection of their personal experiences and emotions. He cited the song “Knock ‘Em Dead, Kid” as an example, which was written after he got into a fight with the police on Sunset Boulevard and ended up in jail. Ah, the classic “I’m-a-rebel-without-a-cause” trope 🤘. And who can forget the band’s iconic album “Theatre Of Pain”, which featured the hit single “Home Sweet Home”? 🏠
But Sixx also acknowledged that the music industry has changed significantly since the band’s heyday. With the rise of streaming and social media, it’s harder than ever for artists to get their music heard. So, what’s a band to do? Release singles and EPs willy-nilly, of course! 📈 It’s like Sixx said, “When opportunity strikes, something comes up, I call the guys. In the fall of 2022, John 5 joined MÖTLEY CRÜE as the replacement for the band’s co-founding guitarist Mick Mars, who announced his retirement from touring due to worsening health issues. We’re not sure what’s more surprising, the fact that John 5 joined the band or that Mick Mars is still alive 🙏.
In any case, the band’s latest lineup has been making waves with their new music, including the “Cancelled” EP.
