I’m sipping my coffee and reading about a mishap on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier, where four US Navy sailors were injured on Monday evening when an aircraft suffered a “mishap” while trying to land on the ship off the coast of Virginia. Bless their hearts, I hope they’re all doing okay. The Navy said in a statement that two aviators ejected from the plane, and I can only imagine how intense that must have been. I mean, who needs that kind of excitement in their day, right?
The incident occurred at approximately 6:18 p.m. EDT on Sept. 28, during aircraft recovery operations aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. The Navy didn’t specify the nature of the mishap, which of course has me wondering what exactly happened. Was it a mechanical issue or just a plain old mistake? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
The two aviators who ejected from the aircraft were promptly recovered by search-and-rescue personnel and safely returned to the ship, where they were undergoing medical evaluations. That’s a relief, at least. Of the four injured sailors, one was evacuated to a hospital in the Norfolk area for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, while the others were treated on the ship.
I’m no expert, but I’m guessing the aircraft involved was either an F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter or an EA-18G Growler electronic attack jet, both of which are typically carried on the Eisenhower. But hey, what do I know? The Navy isn’t saying, and I’m not losing any sleep over it.
A spokesperson told CNN that the Navy would report more details as they become available, so I’ll just have to stay tuned, I suppose. In the meantime, I’ll just be over here, sipping my coffee and wondering what other kind of excitement the day will bring. The Eisenhower completed a planned 15-month maintenance and repair period in April, and as recently as late August, was conducting carrier qualifications off the Virginia coast. Maybe they just need to work out a few more kinks, huh?
In conclusion, it sounds like the US Navy had a bit of a rough day on Monday, but thankfully, everyone involved is going to be okay. As I finish my coffee, I’m left thinking that maybe the Navy just needs to have a nice, calm day at sea, without any “mishaps” or unexpected excitement. And who can blame them, right? After all, who needs that kind of stress in their life? 🙃
