Valve teases HLX on-stage, Half-Life 3 hype train leaves station again

It’s that time again, folks, where we get to speculate about the existence of Half-Life 3, because Valve loves to tease us with cryptic messages and vague hints. This time around, a Valve developer has mentioned something called “HLX” on stage, and the internet is abuzz with excitement and skepticism. Because, let’s be real, we’ve been down this road before, and it’s always a wild ride of emotions, from hope to despair, and back again.

The Mysterious Case of HLX

The mention of HLX came from Valve music designer Mike Moraskey, who was speaking at GameSoundCon 2026 in Burbank, California. According to reports from VGC, Moraskey was discussing how the company implements audio, and in a section about HDR, he casually dropped the HLX bombshell. “In fact, Deadlock has its own version of HDR, HLX has its own version, and so on and so forth.” Now, we can’t help but wonder what HLX actually refers to, and whether it’s related to the long-rumored Half-Life 3.

Rumors and Speculation

Rumors of Half-Life 3’s production have been circulating for nearly a decade, with the most substantial rumor emerging in May 2025, when a Valve insider claimed that the game was being playtested internally. At the time, some clever sleuths discovered keywords like “hlx,” “hlxaudio,” and “hlxartists” in Valve’s internal system, which has led some to believe that HLX might be related to Half-Life 3. However, it’s also possible that HLX could be related to Half-Life: Alyx, the VR title released in 2020, although it’s strange that Valve would only start using the acronym now, four years later.

The Waiting Game

If Half-Life 3 does exist, it’s anyone’s guess when we’ll actually hear or see anything about it. Even Deadlock, another Valve game, is still shrouded in mystery, with only invited players able to access it. We haven’t seen any significant Half-Life activity from Valve since the series’ 25th anniversary in 2023, when the company released new multiplayer maps, restored cut content, and created a documentary about the original game’s development. The 25th anniversary site is still live, but it’s been radio silence since then.

As we wait with bated breath for any news about Half-Life 3, we can’t help but feel like we’re stuck in some kind of gaming purgatory, where rumors and speculation are the only currency that matters. But hey, at least we have HLX to speculate about now, and who knows, maybe one day we’ll actually get to play Half-Life 3. Until then, we’ll just have to keep on speculating, and dreaming of the day when Valve will finally put us out of our misery. And so, the waiting game continues, with HLX as the latest piece of the puzzle in the never-ending saga of Half-Life 3.
