She’s scheduled to keynote a Fulton County Democrats dinner and campaign with Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff at the end of October. This positions her as a closer in one of the key Senate races in the country, in a state she narrowly lost to Donald Trump in 2024. I’m thinking, what’s the strategy here? Is she trying to prove herself as a strong campaigner or just enjoying the limelight?
I mean, Harris is going to be stumping for Ossoff, who’s running for his second term, and that’s a different approach than several other Democrats in tight races who have said they wouldn’t want to campaign with her. I’m wondering, what makes Ossoff so special? According to Ossoff’s spokesperson Ellie Dougherty, “Senator Ossoff is grateful for Vice President Harris’ help and support in his re-election campaign.” That’s nice, but I’m still curious about the reasoning behind this decision.
Harris has been making the rounds, folks, and this won’t be her only stop on the 2026 campaign trail. She’s already slated to appear with two top House Democratic candidates in her home state of California: Marni Von Wilpert and Richard Pan. She’ll also be stumping for Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford, a longtime ally running for governor. That’s a lot of traveling, if you ask me. I’m thinking, maybe she’s trying to build up her frequent flyer miles or something.
In an interview on soccer star Megan Rapinoe’s podcast, Harris said, “I don’t know how to live and not serve. I just don’t know a life without figuring out how I can help move the needle.” That’s a nice sentiment, but I’m not sure what it means in the context of her potential presidential run in 2028. Her spokesperson Eduardo Negrón said, “It is critical for Democrats to win this November so we can fight the Trump administration’s corruption and work to lower costs for the American people.” Okay, got it, but what about Harris’ plans?
The stops come as Harris is mulling whether to make another run in 2028, and as Democrats around the country debate whether they want her to. Several candidates have explicitly said they don’t want Harris to appear for them, which is pretty interesting. It’s like, what’s the tea, folks? Do they think she’s toxic or something? And then there are other potential Democratic candidates who have been fanning out on the campaign trail for others running in this year’s races, including in several early presidential primary states.
Ossoff is being discussed as one of those potential presidential contenders himself, though he told CNN in June that he is not interested in running. I’m thinking, sure, Jan, we’ve heard that before. Anyway, it’s going to be an interesting few months, folks, and I’m excited to see how it all plays out.
