Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. President Donald Trump is at it again, going after the Supreme Court justices he appointed, calling them “shells” of their former selves. I mean, I’ve seen some tantrums in my time, but this one takes the cake. He’s upset because the court blocked his plan to limit mail-in voting ahead of the midterms. Trump wrote on Truth Social, “These are not the people I interviewed to serve on the United States Supreme Court, they are merely a shell of their original selves.” Yeah, because that’s exactly what you want in a Supreme Court justice – someone who will do your bidding without questioning it.
I have to hand it to Trump, though – he’s got some serious guts to go after the justices like that. I mean, it’s not every day you see a president openly criticizing the Supreme Court. But, you know, when you’re used to getting your way, it can be tough to deal with a little thing called “checks and balances.” None of the justices Trump appointed, including Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch, and Amy Coney Barrett, disagreed with the majority opinion blocking the mail-voting changes. I guess that’s just not what Trump had in mind when he picked them.
It’s worth noting that two justices, Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas, did say they would have allowed the rules to go into place. But, of course, that’s not enough for Trump. He’s still fuming about the decision and has decried a number of other rulings handed down by the court that blocked aspects of his agenda. He said the court was “costing the United States Trillions of Dollars with shockingly bad rulings that are of such magnitude that it won’t be easily possible for our Country to recover or heal.” Wow, that’s quite a statement. I’m no economist, but I’m pretty sure the Supreme Court isn’t directly responsible for the country’s finances.
Trump also wrote that the court is “a Court that will go down as having rendered some of the most destructive, hurtful, and damaging decisions in our Country’s history.” Okay, maybe he’s got a point there. But, come on, it’s not like the Supreme Court is trying to ruin the country. They’re just doing their job, which is to interpret the law and make sure it aligns with the Constitution. The Supreme Court did not respond to a request for comment on Trump’s post, which is probably for the best. I mean, can you imagine the justices getting into a Twitter feud with the president? That would be something to see.
Later, Attorney General Todd Blanche said the administration would comply with the latest Supreme Court order, but didn’t rule out trying to pursue changes to mail voting in the years before the 2028 presidential election. He defended Trump’s harsh criticism of the justices, saying the president is “very frustrated” by the ruling. Yeah, no kidding. It’s not every day you see someone go after the Supreme Court like that. Blanche said, “He has every right, and indeed he should communicate his concerns with the Supreme Court whenever he has them. This isn’t the first time that he’s done it, and it won’t be the last.” That’s probably true, but it’s still a bit surprising to see a president go after the court like that.
Despite Trump’s protestations, the Supreme Court has handed him some significant wins, including a 2024 ruling that found presidents have broad criminal immunity for official acts. So, it’s not all bad for Trump. The court also recently allowed construction to continue on Trump’s White House ballroom project after preservationists sued to have the work halted. I guess that’s a win for Trump, too. Still, he’s grown disillusioned with the conservative justices he appointed that have not ruled in his favor during his second term. He wrote, “The Supreme Court has really let our Country down! Certain Justices are petrified of these crazed and depraved Democrats, and are totally unable to show the courage necessary to save our America.” Okay, Trump, we get it. You’re not happy with the Supreme Court.
By comparison, he praised Alito and Thomas – the two most reliable votes for upholding his agenda – as “legends.” I guess that’s one way to get on Trump’s good side. All in all, it’s been an interesting few days for Trump and the Supreme Court. I’m not sure what’s going to happen next, but I’m sure it’ll be entertaining. As I always say, you can’t make this stuff up. And honestly, I’m a little surprised Trump didn’t try to tweet his way out of this one. Maybe he’s finally learning to pick his battles. But I wouldn’t count on it. After all, this is the guy who thinks he can take on the Supreme Court and win. Bless his heart.
