Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest drama at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, where flights were stopped for about 20 minutes on Wednesday night due to a drone spotted flying over the active runway. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, two pilots saw the drone, and I’m thinking, “What in the world?” The pilot of an American Airlines regional jet radioed the control tower, saying, “We saw, like, a drone or something that went flying by, probably halfway down the runway.” I mean, that’s not exactly what you want to hear when you’re trying to land a plane.
The air traffic controller warned other pilots about the “unauthorized UAS activity reported in the vicinity of DCA, type and color unknown,” and flights were halted. I’m imagining the scene in the control tower, with everyone scrambling to figure out what’s going on. The controller told the pilot who made the first report, “It definitely wasn’t nothing,” which is just a fancy way of saying, “Yeah, we’ve got a problem here.”
Airport operations workers searched for the drone, but didn’t find it. Local and federal authorities were notified, and the FBI is investigating. You know, because flying a drone over a busy airport is just a great idea – said no one ever. The FBI investigates illegal drone activity, and if you’re caught, you could face a year in jail and fines up to $100,000. That’s some serious punishment for being a reckless drone pilot.
Unmanned aircraft are prohibited in much of the airspace around Washington, DC, and Reagan National Airport is only a few miles from the White House, the Capitol, and the Pentagon. It’s like a big no-fly zone, and for good reason. The area around airports is also off-limits for drones due to the danger of colliding with aircraft. I mean, come on, it’s just common sense.
In January 2025, Reagan National Airport was the site of a deadly aircraft accident when a manned US Army Blackhawk helicopter collided with an American Airlines regional jet. Sixty-seven people were killed, and it was the deadliest aircraft accident in the United States in more than two decades. The resulting investigation found 15,214 “near miss events” at the airport between 2021 and 2024, where aircraft were within one nautical mile of each other, with a vertical separation of less than 400 feet. That’s just crazy.
The Reagan National Airport is one of the nation’s busiest airports, and it’s been described as “overburdened.” It sits on a relatively small area of 860 acres and has over 800 daily takeoffs and landings. I’m not surprised that it’s a busy place, but maybe we should think about expanding the airport or something. The main runway is the busiest in the country, and it’s just a miracle that we don’t have more incidents like this.
In conclusion, the story of the drone spotted at Reagan National Airport is just another example of how crazy things can get in the world of air travel. I’m just glad that no one was hurt, and the authorities are taking steps to prevent something like this from happening again.
