Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest drama in the Democratic party, and I have to say, it’s getting good. Apparently, Rep. Mike Lawler of New York is a top target for national Democrats to beat in the midterm elections this fall. But, in a surprising twist, Rep. Jared Golden, a retiring moderate Democrat from Maine, has endorsed Lawler. I mean, who doesn’t love a good plot twist, right?
I’m reading that this is the third time in recent weeks that Golden has defied his party, and I’m thinking, bless their hearts, they must be having a fit. Golden argues that Lawler is the kind of Republican that Democrats should be fighting to keep, and I’m like, okay, that’s an interesting strategy. In an op-ed, Golden wrote that Lawler is the exact kind of Republican that Democrats should be supporting, and I’m thinking, this guy is either a genius or a glutton for punishment.
Golden’s op-ed is actually pretty interesting, and I’m quoting him here, “We have real adversaries in this world, and they are not our fellow citizens. When candidates for office tell voters that the gravest danger to this country is other Americans and the leaders they elect, that is radical talk, and it is the same politics of fear I have refused to practice for my entire career.” I mean, I can see why he’d want to endorse Lawler, the guy seems like a reasonable dude.
Lawler’s upstate New York district is one of the few GOP-held seats that Kamala Harris won in the 2024 presidential election, so it’s a pretty important seat. Inside Elections rates the race in New York’s 17th Congressional District as a toss-up, which means it’s anyone’s game. Golden, on the other hand, has been a thorn in the side of his Democratic colleagues, especially in recent weeks. He’s voted twice with Republicans to advance procedural votes, including paving the way for the GOP to force a vote on a resolution denouncing socialism.
Golden’s move has become a major flash point within the party, and I’m thinking, somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying. But, so far, Democratic leaders have not carried out any punishment, which is surprising. In his op-ed, Golden also applauded Lawler for his work with him on a bill to support lobstermen, which is just a nice story. Golden wrote that Lawler didn’t exactly gain anything from supporting the bill, but he did it anyway, because it was the right thing to do.
Golden’s op-ed is actually pretty heartfelt, and I’m quoting him again, “There is not a single lobster boat in his district. He got no votes in this and no headlines back home. He signed on because a historic American industry, thousands of fishing families, and the principle that federal rules should be built on facts were all on the line.” I mean, I can see why Golden would want to endorse Lawler, the guy seems like a stand-up dude.
In conclusion, this whole story is just a big mess, and I’m loving every minute of it. The Democrats are fighting with each other, and the Republicans are just sitting back and enjoying the show. And, at the end of the day, it’s all just politics as usual. But, hey, at least it’s entertaining, and I’m happy to be sipping my coffee and watching the drama unfold. And, who knows, maybe Lawler will win, and maybe he won’t, but one thing’s for sure, it’s going to be a wild ride. 🙃
