Because What The World Really Needed Was More Bridgerton Content

Because What The World Really Needed Was More Bridgerton Content

Netflix has announced another spinoff of its popular series Bridgerton, this time focused on the character of Lady Violet, played by Ruth Gemmell. Because, of course, they are. The show is set to be a limited series, and will follow a prequel format, chronicling the early life of Lady Violet and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. This is the second Bridgerton spinoff to date, following 2023’s six-part Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which was partly set in the main show’s present and partly set in the past as a prequel.

The decision to create another Bridgerton spinoff shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s been paying attention to Netflix’s viewing numbers. The first and third seasons of Bridgerton appear on Netflix’s “Top 10 Most Popular Shows” list, with 113.3 million and 106 million views, respectively. It’s clear that the show is a massive hit, and the streaming giant is eager to capitalize on its success. After all, why fix what isn’t broken, right? The writers, showrunners, and producers of the Lady Violet show are Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini, and Netflix has already renewed the main Bridgerton series for a fifth and sixth season. Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) is expected to be the focus of Season 5.

The Bridgerton Machine Keeps Churning

It’s hard not to feel like we’re witnessing the Content Mines in full operation here. Netflix is clearly trying to squeeze every last drop of juice from the Bridgerton franchise, and it’s not hard to see why. The show is a cultural phenomenon, with a dedicated fan base and a seemingly endless well of storylines to draw from. But at what point do we start to feel like we’re being fed the same old formula over and over again? The Lady Violet spinoff is just the latest in a long line of Bridgerton-related projects, and it’s starting to feel like the franchise is being stretched to its limits.

The fact that Netflix is relying so heavily on its existing franchises is a testament to the company’s willingness to play it safe. Rather than taking risks on new and innovative content, the streaming giant is instead opting to double down on what it knows works. It’s a strategy that’s worked for them so far, but it’s hard not to feel like we’re missing out on something more exciting. Somewhere, a Focus Group earned another bonus for telling Netflix exactly what they wanted to hear.

The Never-Ending Cycle of Spinoffs and Sequels

The Bridgerton franchise is just the latest example of Hollywood’s never-ending cycle of spinoffs and sequels. It seems like every successful show or movie is fair game for a spinoff or sequel, regardless of whether or not it’s actually necessary. The Merchandising Department reportedly approved the decision to create the Lady Violet spinoff before the writers did, which tells you all you need to know about the priorities at play here. It’s all about creating a never-ending stream of content that can be used to sell merchandise, attract new subscribers, and keep the wheels of the franchise turning.

The fact that Netflix has already renewed the main Bridgerton series for a fifth and sixth season is a testament to the company’s commitment to milking this franchise for all it’s worth. And why not? The show is a hit, and the fans are eager for more. But at what point do we start to feel like we’re being taken for a ride? It’s hard not to feel like we’re trapped in some kind of never-ending cycle of spinoffs and sequels, with no escape in sight. The Franchise Resurrection Department remains one of Hollywood’s busiest offices, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

As the news of the Lady Violet spinoff broke, executives reportedly nodded very seriously during an expensive meeting, no doubt congratulating themselves on their brilliant decision to create yet another Bridgerton-related project. Marketing departments have once again declared history to be “made,” and the trailers for the new show will undoubtedly be touted as “the most anticipated event of the decade.” But for those of us who have been watching this saga unfold, it’s hard not to feel a sense of exhaustion. Another beloved franchise has successfully avoided the sweet release of death, but at what cost? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: the Bridgerton machine will keep on churning, until it finally runs out of steam. And even then, there will probably be a spinoff.
