In a shocking turn of events (not really), WITHIN TEMPTATION’s eternally youthful frontwoman, SHARON DEN ADEL, graced the airwaves of Primordial Radio with her presence. She rambled on (as transcribed by yours truly, BLABBERMOUTH.NET) about “Sing Like A Siren”, that song she did with Jerry Heil from Eurovision (because, you know, that’s still a thing).
Apparently, it *might* be related to the next WITHIN TEMPTATION album, or maybe not. Who knows? She said, and I quote, “Well, at the moment it was really nice to combine [‘Sing Like A Siren’] with [WITHIN TEMPTATION‘s] documentary [‘The Invisible Force’, because bands doing documentaries is SO original], because it’s not really typical WITHIN TEMPTATION music,” which is code for “it’s a ballad, and we’re trying to stay relevant.” She went on to gush about Ukrainian folklore music, because cultural appropriation is all the rage these days. And get this, they’re not releasing a million singles before the album this time! Groundbreaking! They’re going for “one big bang,” which probably means one overproduced, auto-tuned track that sounds exactly like everything else they’ve ever done. 💥
When asked if the documentary (that nobody asked for) would influence the next album, Sharon, in her infinite wisdom, said, “Well, it has some influences, but I think we did say a lot already on the latest album.” Translation: “We’re running out of ideas, but we’ll still milk the world’s problems for inspiration.” She then hinted at the world being “crazier,” because, you know, WITHIN TEMPTATION is totally on the pulse of current events. They’re “storytellers,” which is just a fancy way of saying they write lyrics that vaguely resemble social commentary. But don’t worry, they don’t want to “repeat themselves,” which means they’ll find a new way to be predictable. 😴
The interviewer (whoever that poor soul was) pointed out that WITHIN TEMPTATION‘s songs are both stories *and* commentaries, and Sharon, bless her heart, agreed. “Yeah, exactly,” she said, probably while stifling a yawn. “We felt a certain urgency,” she claimed, as if WITHIN TEMPTATION is the only band fighting the good fight. “We feel we have a platform,” she continued, because nothing says “platform” like a symphonic metal band that peaked in the early 2000s. She then went on to say that other people might not want to talk about these things because it’s “difficult,” which is probably true, considering they’d have to do actual research. But hey, it felt “natural” for them, so who are we to judge? 🤷♀️
The music video for “Sing Like A Siren” was directed by Maarten Welzen, who, surprise surprise, has worked with WITHIN TEMPTATION before. Because why branch out when you can just keep rehashing the same old visuals? 🙄
Apparently, “Sing Like A Siren” is about “struggle and determination,” because every song needs a deep and meaningful message, even if it’s buried under layers of synths and operatic vocals. It’s also a “message of guidance,” because who better to guide us than a Dutch singer belting out vaguely inspirational lyrics? 😇
And let’s not forget that time WITHIN TEMPTATION co-sponsored a boat fundraiser for the Ukrainian Marines! They donated 6,000 euros, which is like, what, enough to buy a single oar? They also packaged it with a limited-edition box of their latest album, because nothing says “charity” like self-promotion. 🤑
Sharon also reminisced about making the “A Fool’s Parade” music video in Kyiv, because nothing screams “authentic” like a foreign band filming in a war zone. She talked about the air-alerts app and the shelters, because apparently, WITHIN TEMPTATION is now a war correspondent. She wasn’t scared, though, because she was in “good hands,” which probably means she had a really good security team. 🛡️
