I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the mysterious death of Daniel Erving, an 18-year-old athlete who drowned in a Texas lake three months ago. Now, two teens who were with him at the time have been charged with evidence tampering, and I’ve got to say, this whole thing smells fishy. The authorities have charged 19-year-old Lucas Roper and a juvenile with tampering, according to CNN affiliate WFAA. I’m no detective, but it seems like there’s more to this story than meets the eye.
The incident happened at Lake Ray Hubbard, about 15 miles east of downtown Dallas, back in April. Erving’s mother, Tameca Erving, has been speaking out, saying she knew something was wrong from day one. I can only imagine how tough this must be for her. She’s calling for murder charges to be brought against the two teens, and I don’t blame her one bit.
It’s worth noting that this case is bringing up memories of another 18-year-old Black man, Nolan Wells, who died under similar circumstances on a Fourth of July trip to Horn Island off the coast of Mississippi. No official cause of death has been released, and no charges have been made in Wells’ case, but his death sparked racial tensions and widespread scrutiny. I’m not saying the two cases are connected, but it’s certainly interesting to see the similarities.
Ben Crump, who’s representing the families of Erving and Wells, is speaking out, saying that something doesn’t add up in Erving’s case. Two young white men came to Erving’s house to pick him up, and they went fishing and swimming. But then they came back without Erving, and that’s just not right. Crump wants cases like Erving’s to be investigated as murder investigations until they prove themselves not to be murderers. I think that’s a fair point.
The Erving family is launching an independent investigation, and I think that’s a good idea. They need to get to the bottom of what happened to their son. According to an affidavit, Roper and the other teen suspect are accused of throwing out Erving’s clothes and driving away from the scene. They’re also accused of deleting text messages between them and Erving. That just raises more questions.
In the end, this is a tragic story that’s still unfolding. I hope the authorities can get to the bottom of what happened to Daniel Erving. It’s just a shame that this young man’s life was cut short, and his family deserves answers. As I finish my coffee, I’m left thinking about the what-ifs in this case, and I hope justice will be served. And let’s be real, if I were a detective, I’d be looking into this case a lot deeper – after all, you can’t just drown in a lake with your friends around and have it be an accident, right?
