"Long Story Short: Netflix Serves Up Another Helping of Family Drama, Because We Haven't Had Enough"

Okay, so BoJack Horseman, right? 🤔 Everyone creamed their jeans over it, acting like it was the second coming of Christ 🐴. It was just horses and depression, people. But hey, it did let Netflix pretend it was all about “unique” storytelling while simultaneously churning out the same garbage reality shows everyone loves to hate-watch. Now, the guy who brought you that equine existential crisis, Raphael Bob-Waksberg, is back. Prepare to be mildly whelmed. 😴

He’s gracing us with Long Story Short, which apparently takes all those “deep” concepts from BoJack (you know, the ones you totally understood and didn’t just pretend to get at parties 🙄) and slaps them onto a family. Because nothing says groundbreaking like exploring the oh-so-novel “trials and tribulations” of growing up and raising kids. Groundbreaking.🙄

Netflix, bless their souls, let us have a chat with Raphael, Ben Feldman, and Abbi Jacobson. They talked about the show, the process, and what we can expect. Spoiler alert: it’s more of the same but somehow less interesting. Get ready for heart, drama, and the patented Bob-Waksberg “comedy” that makes you question your life choices. 😐

How did this masterpiece, Long Story Short, come about? Raphael claims it’s because he had kids. Groundbreaking revelation! Having kids makes you think about family?🤯 Who knew? So, naturally, he decided to recycle some themes, but this time, with the added “depth” of exploring people as children, parents, spouses, and siblings. Someone give this man a Nobel Prize for originality. 🏆

Long Story Short focuses on a Jewish family. Because, you know, representation or something. Raphael talked about writing it, but then Ben Feldman chimed in with a “Swapsies?” because apparently, even the actors are bored with this interview.😴 Raphael, bless his heart, pretends to consider it. The comedic timing! The suspense! Then Ben admits he can’t do it. What a comedic genius.🤣🤣🤣

Raphael then babbles on about how this show is a “new gear” for him. “Oh, I have this whole wealth of experience I haven’t used!” Wow! So he was holding back on BoJack? Thanks, genius. He felt like he was running out of ideas but then remembered he could mine his own family for content. 🙄 How innovative. What an artist!👨‍🎨

Abbi Jacobson then starts identifying more as a “writer” than an “actor.” Maybe because she hasn’t been acting as much. To come onto something where the writing is SO strong emotionally, and…emotionally and humorously? Wait for it… Raphael: “Comedically?” Oh, the burns!🔥 Abbi: “Comedically!” Classic. She should stick to writing, clearly.

Ben Feldman, trying to stay relevant, says his answer is the same as Raphael’s. Because of course. It’s about relationships, tones, stories, and people he’s “intimately familiar with.” Translation: It’s based on every stereotype you’ve ever seen in a sitcom. But hey, at least he won’t be bored with himself! Small victories. 🥳

They all worked with live-action vs. animation roles. Apparently, animation is “more secluded and less connected.” Duh. Ben said they had “incredible table reads” that you don’t get in animation. So, they’re patting themselves on the back for doing the bare minimum. They all found their rhythms. People cried. Ben thought one actress was overdoing it. The drama!🎭

Raphael said they looked for actors who would come to the table read. Because showing up is half the battle, apparently. They turned down big names who wouldn’t commit to sitting around a table. Take that, Hollywood! They wanted people who were “excited to be here and wanted to be a part of it.” Which is code for “people desperate for work.” 🤣

Raphael thinks you can feel the camaraderie in the show. Because forced smiles and fake laughter translate perfectly to the screen. Sure, Jan.

So, there you have it. Long Story Short. Coming to Netflix on August 22, 2025. Get ready to pretend you’re watching something profound while secretly scrolling through TikTok.📱
