Trump Demands FIFA Review Because He Said So

Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. President Donald Trump is at it again, this time weighing in on a red card given to Team USA star striker Folarin Balogun during the World Cup. Apparently, Trump personally asked FIFA chief Gianni Infantino to review the decision, which has sparked a whole lot of controversy. I mean, who doesn’t love a good soccer scandal, right? Trump said he just asked for a review, didn’t tell Infantino what to do, and thinks the whole thing was just “two guys running full speed that happened to crash into each other.” Okay, got it.

So, FIFA announced that Balogun would be eligible to play in the Round of 16 against Belgium, which has ignited a firestorm of debate about the integrity of the tournament. Because, you know, the World Cup wasn’t dramatic enough already. Trump even went so far as to question the referee’s integrity, saying he was a “little bit suspect” and encouraging reporters to “check his past.” Hmm, sounds like someone’s been watching too many conspiracy theories on TV.

The whole thing started when the referee in the match didn’t rule the play a foul, but the video assistant referee intervened and called attention to whether Balogun had committed a foul. After slow motion replays, it was decided that Balogun’s spikes had caught the ankle of the Bosnian player, and he was given a red card for “serious foul play.” Harsh, if you ask me. The Royal Belgium Football Association has even filed an appeal of FIFA’s decision to allow Balogun to play in Monday night’s match, saying they haven’t received any explanation from FIFA regarding the matter.

It’s worth noting that Trump said he didn’t tell Infantino what to do, and that an independent committee “made the right decision.” But still, it’s interesting to see the president weighing in on a soccer controversy. I mean, who doesn’t love a good game of soccer, right? The comments from Trump are likely to inflame the controversy surrounding the red card, which has already sparked debate over whether it was warranted.

The play in question happened during Wednesday night’s game, and the referee initially didn’t rule it a foul. But the video assistant referee intervened, and after slow motion replays, Balogun was given a red card. It’s a messy situation, and it’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out. The RBFA has said they have no alternative but to challenge the player’s eligibility for the upcoming match, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens next.

In the end, it’s just another day in the wild world of soccer. And who knows, maybe Trump’s comments will actually make a difference. But probably not. As I always say, you can’t make this stuff up. The World Cup is already dramatic enough without presidential interventions, but hey, at least it’s interesting. And who knows, maybe this will all blow over and we can just enjoy the rest of the tournament. But until then, I’ll just be over here, sipping my coffee and enjoying the show. 🙄
