Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. A teenager, Colt Gray, who opened fire at his Georgia high school in September 2024, is set to appear in court for a “non-negotiated plea and sentencing hearing.” This means he’s planning to change his plea to guilty, which doesn’t exactly come as a shock. I mean, the kid’s facing 55 counts, including felony murder, malice murder, and aggravated assault for each of the four victims. That’s a whole lot of trouble for a 16-year-old.
Now, I’m not a lawyer, but it seems like Colt’s got a pretty tough road ahead of him. His trial was initially set for October, but now he’s expected to appear in court on July 24 for a change-of-plea hearing. I’m guessing his lawyers think it’s better to just own up to it and hope for some leniency. Bless their hearts.
The shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, was a real tragedy. Two students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, and two teachers, Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie, lost their lives. It’s just heartbreaking. And the details of the case are pretty wild. Apparently, Colt brought an assault-style rifle to school hidden in his backpack and made some concerning comments to teachers and parents that morning.
But here’s the kicker: school officials and resource officers went to intercept him, but they confused him with another student named Kolton Gray. I mean, you can’t make this stuff up. It’s like something out of a bad movie. And then Colt prepped his weapon in a bathroom, hid in a hallway, and opened fire into a classroom. It’s just terrifying.
Colt’s father, Colin Gray, was actually convicted in March on murder and manslaughter charges. Prosecutors argued that he was criminally negligent for buying his son an AR-15 rifle as a Christmas gift and leaving it unsecured. I’m not sure what’s more disturbing, the fact that he bought his 14-year-old son a rifle or that he left it lying around.
The trial also revealed some pretty disturbing details about Colt’s childhood. He had mental health problems, was infatuated with school shooters, and had a history of misbehavior in school. His family was even investigated by the Department of Family and Children Services multiple times. It’s a real mess.
As I’m reading this, I’m just thinking, “What could have been done differently?” I mean, it’s clear that Colt had some major issues, and his family was struggling to cope. But at the end of the day, you’ve got to wonder how this kid was able to get his hands on a rifle and take it to school.
In conclusion, this whole story is just a tragedy from start to finish. Colt Gray’s actions were senseless and devastating, and it’s clear that he’s going to face some serious consequences. As I’m finishing up my coffee, I’m just left shaking my head and thinking, “What a waste.” And I’ve got to say, the fact that his father thought it was a good idea to buy him a rifle for Christmas is just the cherry on top of this whole sad sundae. 🙄
