The US House has voted to halt President Donald Trump’s war in Iran, and I’m not surprised, folks, it’s been a wild ride. The vote was 214 to 208, with four Republicans crossing party lines to support the measure brought by Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal. I mean, who doesn’t love a good bipartisan effort, right? It’s not every day you see Republicans and Democrats agreeing on something, especially when it comes to war powers. I guess you could say it’s a small step towards peace, or at least a step towards Congress trying to exert some control over the President’s actions.
The House resolution is being hailed as a significant rebuke of the President’s handling of the conflict, but let’s be real, it’s not like it’s going to change anything drastically. I mean, even if it passes the Senate, it’s not like the administration is going to suddenly stop the war. Concurrent resolutions, as we’re told, lack the force of law, so it’s more of a symbolic gesture than anything else. But hey, symbols can be powerful, right?
It’s worth noting that the Senate will be voting on its own effort to rein in Trump’s war powers in Iran later on, so we’ll see how that goes. Maybe they’ll actually manage to pass something with some teeth, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. The House vote came amid an escalation of the conflict, which is just peachy. I’m sure the families of the four American service members who were killed during the war are just thrilled to hear that the conflict is still raging on.

The bodies of those four American service members returned to the US in flag-draped cases just a day before, and it’s a stark reminder of the human cost of war. Maybe that’s what it takes for politicians to finally take action, who knows? Some Democrats are arguing that the concurrent resolutions are still legally binding, despite what the courts might say, so we’ll see how that plays out.
In any case, it’s been an interesting day in politics, to say the least. The fact that the House and Senate are both taking steps to try and limit the President’s war powers is a step in the right direction, even if it’s just a small one. And who knows, maybe someday we’ll see a world where wars are a thing of the past, but until then, we’ll just have to keep on keeping on.
