Billionaires Explain How They Made More Billions Somehow Again

Well, folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. It’s about Situational Awareness, a multibillion-dollar hedge fund that has been making waves in the financial world, particularly among Wall Street and AI enthusiasts. I’ve seen their name pop up in the news, but they remained largely unknown to the general public – that is until this week when it started to unravel. And let me tell you, it’s been a wild ride.

Leopold Aschenbrenner, the founder of Situational Awareness, was in his early 20s when he started this venture back in 2024. He’s a former OpenAI employee and founded the hedge fund on the premise that “AI will be the dominant driver of global market returns over the next decade,” according to the firm’s site. This guy was young, but he had a vision, and he laid it out in a 165-page essay in June 2024, arguing that governments, businesses, and investors were underestimating how quickly AI would transform the economy. He even managed to turn hundreds of millions of dollars into tens of billions of dollars over roughly two years, which is no small feat.

But that’s only part of the story. The fund employed a risky strategy of borrowing money to purchase stocks. When the investments appreciate, the payoff can be massive. But when the investments sour, the losses can be catastrophic. And that’s what happened – the downturn in AI stocks over the course of this month hit the hedge fund extra hard. It was forced to sell off many investments at a steep discount to rival hedge fund Citadel in what Aschenbrenbren reportedly compared to a “bank run” in a letter to investors.

Aschenbrenner also noted that the fund’s remaining positions are not being financed by borrowing, according to the Wall Street Journal. And, as it turns out, Situational Awareness did not respond to CNN’s request for comment. But, somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’re here, reading about it in our morning coffee.

In conclusion, Situational Awareness has been on quite a journey, and this week’s news has been a real eye-opener. I guess you can’t make this stuff up, but it’s been an interesting ride, and I’m excited to see what happens next. And, as always, I’ll be here, sipping my coffee and shaking my head at the latest financial shenanigans.
