Viking metallers Amon Amarth have unveiled “Upphaf,” their first-ever acoustic song. The single is a stand-alone release while the band continues working on its next studio album.
The single “Upphaf” thankfully doesn’t see the band lightening their sound despite the transition to acoustic instruments. The addition of war drums and a Viking choir keep the atmosphere rich while the hard strums of the guitar and retained death metal vocals, themselves similar to real Viking-era folk vocalization, keeps a sense of barbaric toughness to the sound. The result is a song that is more a departure on paper than in practice, fitting perfectly with their established body of work.
Recent Releases and Upcoming Tour
Amon Amarth previously released another standalone single “We Rule the Waves” last year, a practice the band has been leaning into heavily since 2020.
The Swedish metallers are preparing for a tour of the UK and Europe for fall 2026. The outing kicks off October 9th in Manchester, England, passing through Paris, Vienna, and Milan, before ending in Lisbon on November 15th.
