Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. It seems Rep. Seth Moulton is throwing his hat into the ring to unseat Sen. Ed Markey in Massachusetts. Now, I’m not one to usually get excited about Democratic primaries, but this one’s got some juicy stuff. Markey, the 80-year-old senator, has been around since before Moulton was born, and it’s clear Moulton is trying to make this a referendum on age and fresh ideas.
Moulton, a 47-year-old Marine Corps veteran, is framing his campaign as a chance for a new generation of leaders to take the reins. He’s warning that if Democrats don’t get their act together, they risk losing the Senate majority. And, bless their hearts, he’s trying to make the case that his more centrist track record will bring a winning approach to the party.
Now, Markey isn’t going down without a fight. He’s more energized than ever to take on Trump and the Republicans, and he’s got the backing of some big-name progressive leaders like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. But Moulton is trying to spin this as a choice between the “establishment” and a new way of doing things.
The two of them are going back and forth on issues like Medicare for All, with Moulton advocating for a more incremental approach and Markey pushing for the full-on single-payer model. And, of course, they’re both trying to out-progressive each other on issues like immigration and healthcare.
Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’ve got a full-blown Democratic primary on our hands. But in all seriousness, this is an interesting test of where the Democratic Party is headed. Will they go with the old guard or take a chance on someone new?
Moulton’s also been making headlines for his comments on transgender athletes in women’s sports, which Markey has seized on as a chance to accuse his opponent of being insensitive. It’s clear this is going to be a long and contentious primary, folks.
As I finish my coffee, I’ve got to say, this is going to be a fun one to watch. The Democratic Party is always good for some drama, and this primary is shaping up to be a real barnburner.
