Oh boy, are you guys ready for some feels? 😔 Because I just got done reading an interview with Pepper Keenan from Corrosion of Conformity, and I’m still trying to process all the emotions. I mean, who doesn’t love a good story about a band dealing with the loss of a founding member? 🤷♂️ It’s not like we haven’t all been there before, right? Anyway, Keenan was talking to Chris Garza from Suicide Silence on his podcast, and they got into some deep stuff about the passing of Reed Mullin, the band’s co-founding drummer. 🥁
So, for those who might not know, Reed Mullin was a founding member of Corrosion of Conformity, and he passed away in 2020. 🙏 He had been dealing with some health issues for a while, including an alcohol-related seizure back in 2016. 🤕 Keenan talked about how the band tried to help him out, and even got some assistance from Dave Grohl, who paid for Mullin’s rehab out of his own pocket. 🙌 That’s some serious bro-code right there.
The Legacy of Reed Mullin
Keenan had some amazing things to say about Mullin’s legacy, calling him a “fucking animal on the drums” and saying that he was one of the pioneers of the crossover scene back in the day. 🤘 He also talked about how Mullin’s health issues were a major concern for the band, and how they didn’t know if he’d be able to recover. 🤕 It’s pretty clear that Mullin was a huge part of the band’s sound and energy, and his loss was felt deeply.
But, you know, life goes on, and Corrosion of Conformity has continued to make music without Mullin. 🎸 They just released a new album called “Good God / Baad Man”, which features a new drummer named Stanton Moore. 🥁 Keenan talked about how Moore’s playing style is reminiscent of Mullin’s, and how it feels like Mullin is still with them in spirit. 🙏 It’s pretty cool to see how the band is keeping his memory alive through their music.
And, because you can’t have a metal band without some drama, Corrosion of Conformity just announced that they’ve added a new drummer named Nick Shabatura to the lineup. 🥁 Shabatura comes from a background of playing in tribute bands, including a Nirvana tribute band called Smells Like Nirvana. 🙄 Because, you know, the world really needed another Nirvana tribute band. 🙄 Anyway, Shabatura got the gig thanks to a recommendation from Anthrax/Pantera drummer Charlie Benante, so I guess that’s a pretty good seal of approval. 🤘
The Future of Corrosion of Conformity
So, what’s next for Corrosion of Conformity? 🤔 Well, they’ve got a new album out, and they’re touring with a new drummer. 🎸 They’re also still dealing with the loss of Reed Mullin, but it’s clear that they’re keeping his memory alive through their music. 🙏 It’s pretty inspiring to see how the band has persevered despite all the challenges they’ve faced. 🤘 And, who knows, maybe they’ll even make some new music that’s actually good. 🤷♂️ Just kidding, I’m sure it’ll be great. 😂
