Marvel Reboots Something Else You Forgot Existed Into A TV Series

everything we saw at the marvel television and animation nyc mpvg.1280

It’s no secret that Marvel’s live-action TV output has slowed down significantly in the last few years. The early 2020s were a heyday for new Disney+ shows, with titles like Moon Knight, Ironheart, Ms. Marvel, and She-Hulk making their debut. However, since then, the studio has been relatively quiet, with only a few animated series on the horizon, including more episodes of Marvel Zombies, X-Men ’97, and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

That all changed at New York Comic-Con this year, where Marvel announced a brand new Disney+ show that seemingly came out of left field: Zodiac. According to Brad Winderbaum, Head of Television at Marvel, the show is a spy thriller that will feature a few clues about its direction in the title design. And, if you look closely at the logo, you’ll notice a S.H.I.E.L.D. emblem nestled inside the “A”.

The Zodiac Conundrum

The Zodiac name has been used by various characters in the Marvel comics universe, most of whom are supervillains who use the astrological signs as their alter egos. Given the involvement of S.H.I.E.L.D., it’s likely that the show will feature Nick Fury and Scorpio, an alias that has been used by multiple characters, including Jake Fury, Nick’s brother, and Mikel Fury, his son. One can only assume that the show will explore one of these storylines, or perhaps Jake Gyllenhaal will make a surprise appearance to draw some cartoons and crack some ciphers.

Marvel has announced that Zodiac will premiere on Disney+ in 2028, with the next Marvel TV series, VisionQuest, set to debut next week. It’s worth noting that the show’s announcement has sparked some interest among fans, who are eager to see how Marvel will bring this complex and intriguing storyline to life.

The Never-Ending Cycle of Revivals and Reboots

As we’ve seen time and time again, Hollywood’s annual Nostalgia Harvest is in full swing, and Marvel is no exception. The studio’s decision to revive the Zodiac franchise is just another example of the industry’s tendency to mine familiar properties for new content. It’s a tactic that has worked for Marvel in the past, but one can’t help but wonder how long this cycle of revivals and reboots can sustain itself.

Meanwhile, the Content Mines remain fully operational, churning out new shows and movies based on existing IPs. It’s a phenomenon that has become all too familiar in modern Hollywood, where the pursuit of familiarity and brand recognition often takes precedence over original storytelling. Somewhere, a Focus Group earned another bonus for telling executives what they wanted to hear, and the Marketing Department is already declaring that history is “made” with the announcement of Zodiac.

As we wait with bated breath for the premiere of Zodiac, one can’t help but feel a sense of exhaustion with the whole affair. Another beloved franchise has been carefully extracted from its natural habitat, and the Merchandising Department is no doubt rubbing its hands together in glee. It’s a never-ending cycle, and one that shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. And so, we’ll just have to wait and see how Marvel’s latest endeavor plays out, all while wondering what other nostalgic properties will be dredged up next.
