It’s high noon, and Blondie is back with a new album, because apparently, retirement is just a distant memory in the music industry. The legendary band is set to release their 12th studio album, High Noon, on February 26, 2027, via BMG. This long-awaited collection of new material comes nine years after their previous studio album, and it’s a testament to the band’s enduring creative spirit. High Noon is a broad mix of sounds, ideas, and collaborators, featuring contributions from the likes of Johnny Marr, Glen Matlock, and Zach Condon of Beirut, among others.

The Album: A Reflection of Blondie’s Eclectic Style

High Noon marks the final recording of Blondie’s co-founding drummer Clem Burke, who passed away before the album’s completion. The record has taken on a new significance for the band, serving as a document of one of rock music’s longest-running creative partnerships. The album’s lead single, Spectral Eyes, written by Johnny Marr, sets the tone for the rest of the record, with its crystalline riffs, steady beat, and bright, hypnotic chorus.

A Look Back at Blondie’s Illustrious Career

With a career spanning over four decades, Blondie has been a constant presence in the music industry. From their early days as a punk rock band to their current status as legends, they have always managed to stay relevant and fresh. Their music has been a reflection of their eclectic style, incorporating elements of rock, pop, and new wave. High Noon is no exception, featuring a mix of energetic and enigmatic tracks that showcase the band’s ability to stretch their sound without losing sight of what makes it their own.

The Making of High Noon

Sessions for High Noon began in 2022, with the band recording in New York City alongside producer John Congleton. Much of the material was tracked together in the same room, reflecting the collaborative approach that has long defined the band. David Wrench later joined for additional production and mixing, bringing his expertise to the table. The visual world of High Noon was conceived by artist and director Rob Roth, who has collaborated with Blondie for over 25 years. Roth’s approach mixes cinematic imagery, analog textures, and contemporary references, creating a visual language that draws on Blondie’s history without being bound by it.

The Tracklisting: A Mix of Old and New

High Noon features a range of tracks, including Heartbreak Kid, written by Chris Stein with Johnny Thunders in mind, and Sleepwalking, written by Glen Matlock, which brings a gritty punk energy. The band also revisits Little Metal Drummer, originally recorded by Blondie co-founding keyboardist Jimmy Destri for his solo debut Heart On A Wall. Other highlights include Man Who Had No Face, which pairs pulsating keys and electric guitar with one of Debbie Harry’s most vivid lyrics on the record. The album’s tracklisting is a testament to Blondie’s ability to create music that is both familiar and new, with a unique blend of styles and influences that has come to define their sound. Somewhere, a record label executive felt a disturbance in the royalties, and the remaster economy remains undefeated, as fans eagerly await the release of High Noon. Nobody truly retires in this industry; they merely wait for the 40th anniversary edition, and the farewell tour count has officially entered scientific notation. Music historians are preparing fresh shelves for the box set, and a vinyl pressing plant somewhere just burst into tears. Nature is healing, and another deluxe edition has appeared, but for now, let’s just enjoy the music.
